Obituary
There is a hole in our hearts, our hero, our mentor, our dad is gone. Larger than life Dad lived each day with laughter, love, sharp wit, quick comebacks and the love of family. Visiting was more often with a game of cards where he always seemed to have the better hand despite the best effort of family and friends.
Don was always hard at work, never sitting still was his key to aging well. From the tender age of nine in Antigonish, he was on the go. From working on the farm at St. Andrew’s Parish to logging in Cape Breton, cutting grass and managing livestock at the Bethany convent to the mines of Wawa and finally Stelco. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, the Knights of Columbus and a volunteer driver for the Cancer Society. Dad built our forever home and farmed the land while working full-time. He taught us the value of hard work and commitment. He loved to refinish furniture, manage his property, travel and explore new places with mom and his kids, always up for an adventure and to try something new. Don is predeceased by his loving wife Anita (Johnstone), family members in Nova Scotia; brothers Allan, John A, and Alexander and sisters Sadie and Katherine. Survived by sisters Theresa, Mary and Joan. He shares many fond memories of the school hall and church dances, tapping his toes to the fiddle and bagpipes.
Don and Anita built a family in Ontario and family was precious to them. Home was the place for Sunday supper and to have relatives near and far come to stay. Survived by daughter Shelley (Robert), grandchildren Danielle (Terrance), Jennifer, Robbie (Elise), Joshua and Frank, great-grandchildren Alexandra, Elizabeth, Hannah, Thomas, Etta and Claire as well as his first great-great-grandchild Jack (Hannah) in Kitimat BC. Daughter Janice (Les, Roy), grandchildren Jason (Bethany), and Jeffery (Andy), and great-grandchildren Lila and Ryan. Son David (Kim) and grandchild Adam (Brandi), great-grandchildren Sloan, Kenzie, and Carson. Son Allan (Cheryl), grandchildren Nick (Julie) and Tyler (Alisha), great-grandchildren Brooklynn, Hunter, Bentley, Myla and Cooper. Son Greg (Judith) grandchildren Cassandra (Greg) and Samantha (Greg) affectionately known as G2 and G3. Daughter Tamara (Chris) and grandchildren Carter (Katie), Trent and Lara.
Visitation will take place on January 14, 2023 from 2-5 p.m. at KITCHING STEEPE & LUDWIG FUNERAL HOME, 146 Mill Street N., Waterdown. Funeral Mass to follow at a later date. Cremation has taken place. Each day is a gift that is given to us to give to one another.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Cancer Society please. Please sign the Tribute Wall.
