Dietrich “Dick” Loewen
March 31, 1931 – February 18, 2023
Dick was born in Swift Current, Sask. He was the oldest of 9 children. At the age of 3 or 4 he moved with his parents to a homestead 20 miles from Carrot River, Sask. He grew up helping his father clearing and developing the property for crops, pastures, and gardens. He got his education in a one room school that included grades 1 to 8.
His first jobs were for neighbors, clearing land with a CAT. Farming wasn’t really Dick’s passion so he moved to Saskatoon where he found work with Cockshut and later John Deere. At each place he soon advanced to a managerial position. The work ethic he learned from his father on the farm stood him in good stead.
In 1959 Dick married Katherine Thiessen and they lived in Saskatoon for several years. Fulfilling a long time dream of theirs they bought an acreage at Christopher Lake not too far from Prince Albert, Sask. This is when Dick started driving school bus which he did until retirement. He enjoyed the children and had many stories to share about interesting and sometimes humorous incidents.
When the acreage became too much for Dick and Kay to manage they moved into Prince Albert, Sask. Dick filled his time with hobbies and volunteering. Fishing, berry picking, and wood burning were favorite hobbies. He volunteered at several places: a Bible Camp near where they lived, Mt. St. Joseph, NCEM, and Gleaner’s in Oliver, B.C. He enjoyed going back to “sort of” farming to help out his cousin with haying and other farming events.
In his 70’s Dick started going to the library to learn to use the computer so he could keep in touch with family by email. He did this pretty much daily until he went into hospital.
Faith and family were important to him. He regularly prayed through the family list which included anyone he considered family.
Dick enjoyed his years living at River Breeze and we thank the staff for making it such a comfortable place for him. And a thank you to the doctor and nurses at the hospital. He told us he was comfortable and content to be there and well looked after. To Blaine and Rachel Witherow, a huge thank you for your incredible, faithful love and care for our brother through the years.
Dick was predeceased by his wife, Kay; sisters Mary Leiding, Lena Thiessen, and Tena Loewen; and niece Brenda Cram. Those fondly remembering Dick are siblings Henry (Janette) Loewen, Liese Loewen, Anne Loewen, Sue Dyck, and Netha (Sam) Hayes; along with 11 nieces and nephews, 27 great nieces and nephews, and 5 great great nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm, Thursday, March 2, 2023 at P.A. Alliance Church, 2777 6th Avenue West, Prince Albert
Memorial donations in his memory may be made to:
Northern Canada Evangelical Mission, P.O. Box 3030, Prince Albert, S6V 7V4
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of Gray’s Funeral Chapel, (306) 922-4729, Paula Hanson, Funeral Director, and Mary MacWilliams.
