It is with deep sadness we announce the sudden passing of Craig Gerard O’Leary of St. John’s, at the age of 58. Originally from Portugal Cove South, Craig passed peacefully away at his home in St. John’s on March 28, 2023.
For those blessed by his presence, Craig was a kind-hearted, gentle soul. He loved live music and sports, his happiest times were spent listening to music and dancing at Greensleeves, catching up with friends and taking in a local game of Growlers hockey or watching his beloved Canadiens on TV. His loyalty to family, friends and his favorite sports teams knew no end. He embraced people with a genuine spirit and a belief in the good in the world. While he loved his childhood friends and family home in the comfort of O’Leary’s Loop, Portugal Cove South, life in St. John’s brought him so much joy and a much broader circle of friends and entertainment.
Craig was pre-deceased by his loving and devoted father, Brendan, together now to cheer on their Habs through good and bad. He leaves to mourn with heavy hearts but precious memories his mother, Marie (Hewitt); sisters: Sharon Power (Darrell), Bernadine (Jeffrey O’Keefe), and Leanne (Mitch Rumbolt); brother Rick (Martin Mikkelson); nieces and nephews whose endeavors he encouraged and of whom he was so proud: Patrick and Jonathan Power (Allanah), Conor and Maren O’Keefe, Kate and Natalie Rumbolt; and great-nephew Max Power. Craig leaves behind a large group of aunts, uncles and cousins in the O’Leary and Hewitt families. Being a part of such a close-knit family brought Craig much comfort and happiness.
Craig was blessed with a second family, a community of friends centered around the staff, patrons and musicians of Greensleeves and his other favorite places. For many, he was known fondly as ‘Pepsi Craig’. His infectious laugh, kindness and spirit brought so many good and kind people into his life, bringing him joy with every encounter. He welcomed them and cherished their friendship, while returning kindness, generosity of spirit and acceptance. Craig’s light touched so many lives, and his downtown community brightened his life in a way we will never forget and for which we, his family, are forever grateful.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation at Caul’s Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road on Sunday, April 2, 2023 from 2 p.m. – 9 p.m. and at Fahey’s Funeral Home, Trepassey, Monday April 3, 2023 from 3 p.m. – 9 p.m. Funeral Mass will take place at Holy Redeemer Church, Trepassey at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 4, 2023.
As an expression of sympathy, donations, if so desired, may be made to the Vera Perlin Society, whose programs, staff and volunteers provided much social and employment support to Craig since he moved to St. John’s decades ago.
Until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand – Irish blessing
