Spooner, Cecilia Bernadette (nee Meaney)
Passed away at the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital after a brief illness on Tuesday June 27th, 2023. She was 93 years old.
Cec was the daughter of Jim Meaney and Susan McNeil. She was predeceased by her eight brothers and sisters who she always remembered with much love and humour: Evelyn, Mary, John, Anne, Jim, Bill, Rita, and Thomas.
In 1948, she married her devoted husband Kenneth Arthur Spooner. Though he passed away in 1990, after 42 years of marriage, he was always in her thoughts. Ken (Gloria Jane) and Bob (Billie Zehr) will cherish their memories of her as a devoted mother. The endless love she showed her four grandchildren was legendary. Kevin (Bina Mehta), Tracy, Tyler, and Kyle (Bailey Clampitt) will treasure the place she held in their hearts forever. Tracy, in particular, was her horror movie soulmate. Her four great grandchildren, Nikesh, Prem, Stevie, and Bo will be her lasting legacy.
Granny lived life large. As a working mother, she spent years employed in restaurants, at Georgian China, and at the Blue Mountain Pottery. Remembered as a terrific cook and baker, she first learned how to feed generations of Spooners at the side of her father, an army cook in the Second World War. Her Newfoundland inspired cherry loaf and heavily fortified Christmas fruitcake were renowned. People were known to have almost come to blows over her fudge. And, somehow, she still found time for countless other activities. For decades, she was a long-standing member of the Collingwood branch of the Rebekah Lodge and was a determined, if not very good, bowler. Cec was a stalwart presence in casinos, local bingo halls, and was a fervent card player at the Legion and Leisure Time Club. She was an expert crochet artist. Her one regret in life might have been missing out on earning the world record for fastest maple walnut ice-cream eating, though she certainly practiced with gusto.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude for the years of wonderful care provided by Dr. Marion Arthur, and the more recent efforts by Deb, Linda, and all the staff at Pine Villa who welcomed her into their community of care.
In lieu of flowers, and in the spirit of Granny feeding everyone, the family would appreciate contributions to the Collingwood Mobile Soup Kitchen. Donations can be provided by giving to Elephant Thoughts – Education for a Changing World and designating your donation to the Collingwood Mobile Soup Kitchen.
A private family service will be followed by interment at All Saints Anglican Cemetery in Collingwood, where she will finally be reunited with her beloved husband Ken. Arrangements entrusted to Chatterson Funeral Home, Collingwood. A celebration of life to be held at a later date.
