Michelle Healey
January 24, 1973 – April 23, 2024

Michelle, beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend and athlete passed away suddenly on Tuesday, April 23rd at the age of 51, leaving behind a legacy of love, determination, and community impact.
Michelle leaves to mourn her husband Phil and daughter Ella, parents Tony and Maureen Healey, sister Anna Mary, brothers Joe (Anne Marie), and Brian (Charleen), nephew Jack and nieces Claire, Sarah, and Kaitlin, father-in-law Larry, mother-in-law Mary (deceased) sister-in-law Mary Elaine (Zain) and Judy (deceased) and brother-in-law Paul and Larry (deceased) and a large circle of friends, family and co-workers.
Her greatest sources of pride and joy were Phil and Ella. Their life was filled with weekends at their cherished cabin on the Salmonier River with their dogs, Marley and Rosie, and travelling the world on family adventures.
She adored Ella and took immense pride in her accomplishments, supporting her in all endeavours with unwavering love and encouragement. Her favourite place was in the stands watching Ella.
Michelle was passionate for so much in her life including coaching and volunteering, where she inspired countless individuals to pursue their dreams and reach their full potential. Michelle’s thoughtfulness and small and large gestures to so many people were always unsolicited and without her ever asking for recognition.
Michelle was so dedicated to her professional life and sport and recreation was her priority in both her role as Athletic Director at Memorial University and her current position with the Government of Newfoundland & Labrador. She was not only an athlete with the Canada Games but she was also engaged with Team NL’s Mission Leadership for many years. She was always extremely supportive of the Canada Games both in sport development for our provinces athletes and also playing a key role in the games returning to NL in 2025. She was a champion for so many.
As an accomplished athlete, Michelle dedicated her life to sports, both as a competitor and as a mentor. Michelle’s basketball career started at Enright Memorial in Grade 8. She was not only noticed for her basketball prowess, she confidently attended her first provincial tryout rocking a red Adidas tracksuit with stirrups. In 1989 she made Canada Games team representing NL in Saskatoon. That was the start of friendships lasting over 35 years. Accolades of her legendary MUN career as a leader, fierce competitor, teammate and friend include: AUS First Team All Star, AUS MVP, first ever AUS Championship for MUN, CIS Academic All Canadian and Athletics Honours Society.
Matched with her competitiveness, she was ahead of her time in skill and known as the greatest shooter in AUS sport history. She changed the game in our province for female basketball. Michelle had a team first approach and humble nature, never wanting to accept credit for their success.
She took her athletic talent to the football field, soccer pitch, the Blue River Olympics and everywhere in between and she was great at everything, but being our friend was her real superpower.
The memories of her kindness, strength, and infectious enthusiasm will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The R.E.A.L. Program (Online campaign list RECconnect (activecommunities.com) in honor of Michelle’s lifelong dedication to the recreation & sports community or perform random acts of kindness & expressions of gratitude in her memory.
Visitation to happen at Caul’s Funeral Home on Friday, April 26th from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. – 9 p.m., and Saturday, April 27th from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. In true Michelle fashion there is going to be an Irish Wake on Saturday at 8:00 pm at the Swilers Rugby Club on Crosby Road. A funeral mass to take place at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in St. Marys Bay on Monday, April 29th at 11:00 am. Join us in honoring her memory and sharing stories of her remarkable life.
