It is with profound grief and sadness that we announce the sudden and devastating passing of our son, brother, and dad. Matthew Raymond Oakley of St. John’s, aged 35. To know Matthew was to love him. He will be remembered for having a kind heart, a genuine smile, and being quick with a joke. Though his life was cut heartbreakingly short, he will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Predeceased by his maternal and paternal grandparents as well as several aunts and uncles. Matthew leaves to mourn his beloved family, who always supported and saw the best in him and wished for his success. His devoted parents, mom Marilyn Oakley and dad Alfred Rowe. His siblings, sisters Kimberley Oakley (Brad) and Lynn Yetman (Jim) and brothers Max Rowe (Karla), Alfred Rowe Jr. His pride and joy, son Matthew (Matty) O’Brien. Words cannot describe the love and adoration Matthew had for Matty. Matthew wanted to be the best dad he could be and the bond they shared was unbreakable. Matthew also leaves a large circle of family and friends.
Matthew’s journey was not without challenges. His personal health struggles at times overshadowed his greatest intentions. Despite his own struggles, he had many successes, serving in the Royal Canadian Navy as a reservist in his young adult years and later pursuing post-secondary education and becoming a red seal electrician. Matthew was naturally bright and inquisitive and was very skilled in many ways, a true Jack of all trades.
Cremation has taken place. A private funeral service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Matthew’s memory to the Canadian Mental Health Association – Newfoundland and Labrador Division (CMHA-NL) or Heavenly Creatures.
“Dad, why do all the best people die?”
“My son, when you are in a garden, which flowers do you pick? The most beautiful ones”
