Karen Lynn Walsh (Chancey)
March 26, 1971 – April 29, 2024
With profound heartbreak, we announce the sudden passing of Karen L. Walsh on Monday, April 29th. She is not only a mother to her three shining daughters but a motherly figure to all. She will be cherished for her wisdom, support, and empathy. To many, her radiance was contagious. She could light up a room that she wasn’t even in.
Karen is predeceased by her grandparents Myer and Blanche Frelich, other grandparents James and Bridget Chancey, Uncle Robert (Bob) and Aunt Barbara Frelich, cousin Jill Teichman, cousin Rev. Brother Gordon Bellows, and mother-in-law Genevieve Walsh. Leaving to mourn are Karen’s loving parents, John and Brenda Chancey, adoring husband Barry Walsh, three beautiful daughters Sophie, Lily, and Katie Lynn, cousin Robert Frelich, nieces Samantha and Sarah Teichman, father-in-law Ronald Walsh, and many colleagues and friends who became family members.
Karen graduated high school a year early and begun an extensive university career which included her Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Education (B.Ed), Masters in Education (M.Ed), and Law Degree (L.L.B). Her academic pursuits were varied, demonstrating her passion for lifelong learning eventually leading to her true calling and passion; teaching. Karen leaves colleagues and students (former and current) throughout several school communities including O’Donel, Booth Memorial, Prince of Wales Collegiate, and Holy Trinity High in Torbay.
Karen exemplified the Teachers Creed: “Above all, Do nothing to diminish hope.”
She met students where they were in their learning journey; always going many miles more than expected or required but never less than what she saw was necessary for each student to thrive.
Characterized by incredible optimism, undeniable charm, incorrigible wit, and an unsurpassed work ethic, Karen lived every moment of life to the fullest. She modeled living a life of virtue, vision, and Joie de Vivre for her three daughters and today she can be seen alive in them as they demonstrate their own intellect, grit, empathy, and sharp wit. We were so blessed to have had her as our North Star and we are better people because of her.
In Karen’s memory; in reflection of her life’s work in education and the improvement of the lives of many peoples’ children, a scholarship fund for her own three children has been established.
