Irene Baird
August 5, 1935 – June 22, 2024
Passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Centre on Saturday, June 22, 2024, with her beloved sister, Sister Dorothy Baird holding her hand, Irene Margaret Baird, aged 88.
Predeceased by her parents Patrick and Bride (nee Nolan) Baird, her brother Kevin and his wife Zena, and her sister Madonna Baird.
Leaving to mourn her devoted sister, Sister Dorothy Baird pvbm, as well as several cousins and her circle of friends.

Irene’s impressive career with the Provincial Government spanned more than thirty years. Her managerial and director positions in the Department of Health and Executive Council culminated in twice being Assistant Secretary to Cabinet before she took on challenging roles as Assistant Deputy Minister in the Petroleum Directorate, followed by Assistant Deputy Minister in the Department of Energy. In 1987 Irene was recognized in The Evening Telegram as one of six “women rising to senior government ranks.” Following her retirement from provincial service, Irene operated her own consultant business for fifteen years, IMB Associates. Despite her extremely busy career, Irene always made time to volunteer. Cumulatively, she gave sixty years of volunteer service to various organizations. She held positions of responsibility such as Regional President NL, Canadian Red Cross; Secretary of the Arthritis Society (NL); Public Representative, Association of Registered Nurses NL, and membership on various boards and committees in the fields of health, education, social services and her church. For her contributions she received Volunteer of the Year with the Canadian Red Cross Society NL Region, a national Special Achievement Award with the Canadian Diabetes Association, and an award in the Builder category with the Arthritis Society, NL Division. In 2012 Irene was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for her outstanding community service. Irene was meticulous in each and every activity she engaged in, once saying to Sister Dorothy that “I want to make a difference in whatever I do.” Irene certainly did that.
Resting at Caul’s Funeral Home, 84 LeMarchant Road, on Monday, June 24, 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. and on Tuesday, June 25, 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. – 9 p.m.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held from the Basilica of St. John the Baptist on Wednesday, June 26 at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully accepted, or memorial donations may be made to the Basilica Heritage Foundation www.thebasilica.net/donate/
