Obituary
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Gloria Reddy (Hynes). Gloria departed this world on September 19th surrounded by the love of her family. Gloria was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, resilience and a deep appreciation for nature.
Born on August 29, 1948 in Stephenville, Gloria moved to St. John’s at a young age and went on to obtain a Bachelor of Education from Memorial University of Newfoundland. She married the love of her life, Mike Reddy in 1970 and the two spent a decade camping, traveling and exploring life’s adventures before starting their family.
Gloria is survived by her husband, Mike; children: Michael, Carolyn (Lars), Matthew, Ashley (Chris) and Kathryn (Alex); as well as her seven vibrant grandchildren: Jacqueline, Malcolm, Clark, Heidi, Stella, Frankie and Juniper. Gloria was a guiding light to her family. Her devotion to them was unmatched, and her proudest moments were watching them grow into the eclectic individuals they are today. She was their biggest cheerleader and their driving force, and her memory will live on in their hearts forever.
After her mother’s passing, Gloria was raised by her aunt and maintained strong relationships with both families, each of whom held a special place in her heart. Left to grieve her passing are her siblings: Gary (AnnMarie), Beverly (Hugh), Paul (Jennifer), Jane, Karen, Gail, Jacqueline (Lou), Christine (Brian), Francis (Pauline), Audrey (Teddy), Roy (Liz), Dexter and Lorinda (Tom). Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Elizabeth Hynes (Benoit) and Eldred and Helena Churchill (Benoit); siblings, Wayne Churchill, Eldred Hynes and Hazel Hynes; and parents-in-law, Ronald and Isabel Reddy. To her family she is remembered as a pillar of strength and a source of endless wisdom.
Gloria loved children and had an incredible ability to connect with any child fortunate enough to meet her. She was the eldest daughter in both her families, working to keep her siblings safe and loved – even if that meant throwing away a brand-new jar of peanut butter because her sisters dropped the glass jar. She and Mike cherished their own five children and were widely recognizable because of their traveling circus. Gloria’s career as a primary school teacher enabled her to nurture and educate children in Stephenville, St. John’s and Tsiigehtchic. After her retirement, Gloria went on to care for young children out of her home. Though, anyone who knew Gloria would know that she was rarely home. She was more likely off gallivanting in the woods, at the beach, or in the park. Her playful nature shone through until the end when, even as a 76 year old woman she crawled through the play area at the Toronto aquarium.
Gloria had an adventurous spirit. She loved spending time in nature and connecting with her Indigenous roots. She found solace and joy on the land, whether she was hiking, camping, gardening, berry picking, or simply sitting quietly under the sky. Her connection to nature was not just a passion but a way of life, deeply woven into the fabric of her being. On one occasion, Gloria and her sister Lorinda were so content berry picking that they lost track of time and got caught on the mountainside in the dark. Eventually, their husbands called for reinforcements and the police found them in the woods. By then, the two women had made a small shelter and settled in for the night.
These are only a sample of stories from Gloria’s remarkable life.
Family and friends are invited to share more stories and honor her memory at Caul’s Funeral Home, 84 LeMarchant Road on Sunday, September 22nd from 12 p.m – 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, September 23rd at 11 a.m from St. Teresa’s Church.
Gloria’s spirit will forever be a part of the wind, the trees, and the hearts of all who knew her. Though she is no longer with us, her legacy of love and adventure will continue to inspire and uplift those she left behind.
