Barbara Marie Mason (Browne)
February 24, 1935 – October 19, 2022
MASON (Browne), Barbara Marie
February 24, 1935-October 19, 2022
Died peacefully at home surrounded by her adoring family on October 19, 2022 at the age of 87. Predeceased by parents John (Jack) and Ellen Mary (Nell) Browne, brothers Bill, Ed, Paddy, John and Joe , sisters Mary, Frances, and Patsy Hynes, sister-in- law Doreen Browne, brother-in-law Lorne Hynes and 5 infant siblings. Barbara was the last surviving sibling of the Browne family of Young St/ Carter’s Hill. Schooled at Presentation Convent, Barbara developed into one of the best sopranos the world has ever heard, and was honored to have pianist Averil Baker (senior) as her accompanist throughout her musical career. Barbara’s vocal achievements include winning the Kiwanis Music Festival Rose Bowl, countless national and provincial festivals awards, vocal tutelage at Mount Orford, Quebec, performing throughout Europe, and cantoring at The Basilica, St. Patrick’s, St. Paschal Baylon (Toronto) and St. Teresa’s. In 1971, after working at Memorial University and the Cancer Society, she married Harold Mason and moved to Toronto, where she continued to be a sought after soprano. Barbara’s kindness and compassion shone through in her work as a high school special needs assistant and as a volunteer with her children’s school and her church. In 1997 Barbara returned with Harold to St. John’s where they ran two successful businesses. Her greatest accomplishment, however, was being a loving and cherished grandmother to Brock and Alicia, to whom she dedicated all her free time and love and by whom she was adored. Thank you, Dr. Roger Butler and team, Palliative Paramedics, community health nurses, and Erika & Michelle at Lawton’s for the support provided to Barbara and her family during her last week of life. Thank you Dr. Carew, TLC Nursing, Dr. Dave Jones, Fr. Critch, the Sisters of Mercy, Darcy Street friends, and Erin at Caul’s. Paska, Colleen, Abiba, Johanne and Sanjida, thank you for the love and care you provided mom and the joy and smiles that you brought to her face. Left with beautiful memories are her husband of 51 years, Harold Mason, children Michael and Barbara Ellen, son-in-law Pete Quinton, grandchildren Brock and Alicia, sisters-in-law Eileen, Jean, and Kay Browne, Sr. Geraldine and Sr. Maura Mason, Bernadette Weinheber, Pauline Rodden-Aubut, brothers-in-law Tom (Marg) and John (Agnes) Mason along with numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Joanne Browne, Pete, Geraldine, Jean, and Maura thank you for comforting us during our sorrow, vigiling with us,and helping us care for our father during this heartbreaking time. You shared our laughter, memories, and tears and ensured that mom had a peaceful, dignified and gracious reunion with God and her family. Mass of Chrisitan burial for Harold and Barbara on Wednesday, September 4th at 11:00am at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist, Military Rd.

Make me a channel of your peace.
Where there’s despair in life, let me bring hope.
Where there is darkness, only light,
And where there’s sadness, ever joy.
Thank you for the music, Mom.
