Inez Penney Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Inez Penney announced her passing at Glenbrook Lodge, St. John’s, NL on Sunday June 30th, 2024 aged 80. We would like to give a big thank you to all the nurses and staff at Glenbrook Lodge for taking such wonderful care of Inez in her final years and days of her life, particularly Annette, Rose, and Jason, who not only ensured that Inez was well looked after but family and visitors as well.
Inez often spoke with admiration about her parents’ kindness, hospitality, and love. She would often regale us of stories about her mother Edna and her father Cyril caring for the sick in Twillingate hospital, bringing a warm meal or sweets to neighbours, and how their door was always open to anyone and everyone in need of a cup of tea or a listening ear. Inez however rarely recognized that she built off this foundation and not only extended kindness, hospitality, and love to her immediate community but across the province, nation, and world.
When Inez set her mind on a task, a cause, an organization, a topic, she would throw her entire body and soul behind it. This tenacity meant she was heavily involved in several church organizations, United Church Women, the Fellowship of the Least Coin, World Day of Prayer, and Women’s Inter-Church Council of Canada to name a few. Through these groups she was given the opportunity to travel to Asia, Africa, and Europe, to see giraffes, temples, and markets of which many could only dream. Upon her return her stories were never about the amazing sites but of the people. And so, much like the story of her parents, her collection of friends and family grew and knew no bounds. Everyone she met no matter how near or far were always invited down to her home. From Ontario where next door neighbours were quickly adopted into the family and dubbed aunts and uncles to her two girls, to Grand Falls where she became intertwined with not only the United Church, but also became an avid curler. Later in life that home became Moreton’s Harbour where everyone was invited to sit by the water, to listen to her play some of her favourite hymns on the slightly out of tune piano that sat in the living room, to enjoy some fish cooked up by her husband Eric, and to share in a slice of her delicious pie, of which she always made two as her love of sweets often meant one would be half eaten before visitors arrived.
What ultimately anchored Inez as she journeyed through her life, however, was her family: the memory of her parents’ kindness, her brother, her husband, her daughters, and host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her stories in those far-flung places often started with the pride she had in her beautiful family, their most recent achievements or thoughts they had shared with her over one of the many phone calls, and ultimately her love for them all. Not only did Inez build upon the legacy she so admired in her own parents, but she spread her own legacy through her family, who continue to build on that foundation and regale others of her stories of love each day.
Inez leaves to mourn her daughters Dana Penney (Bill), Roxanne (Tom) Corbin, her grandchildren Thomas, Sydney, Ericka, and MacKenzie, her great grandchildren A.J and Silas, her brother George (Jean) White, her nieces Annette and Susan and their families, her cousin Carl (Daphne) Waterman, her sister-in-law Ferne (Gord) Simms, and her brothers-in-law Edward Penney, and Bryce (Monica) Penney, as well as a large circle of extended family and friends.
Inez is predeceased by her husband Eric Penney, and her parents Edna (nee Humber) and Cyril White.
Inez’s voice long graced the choir and congregation of the First United Church of Mount Pearl, her food their tables, and her programs their halls. In lieu of flowers, donations in Inez’s memory can be made to her beloved First United Church of Mount Pearl to help support the future of their choir, their programs, and their community.
