Raymond Schumph Obituary
It is with sadness and regret we announce the passing of Raymond Schumph on November 29th, 2023 at the Bay St. George Long Term Care Centre in Stephenville Crossing after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Ray was an intelligent, witty, humble, patient, kind and thoughtful husband, father, grandfather, and friend and though Alzheimer’s took his intellect and memory, it did not take his wit, humility, patience, kindness, or thoughtfulness.
He leaves to mourn with loving memories: his wife of 60 years Ursula (nee Ryan); son Stephen (Joanne) Schumph; daughter Paula (Sean); grandchildren: Simon, Clara, Alex, and Robbie; sister Joan Couture; sisters-in-law: Ann Marie Doucet, Margaret Blake, and Sarah Woods; as well as a large circle of extended family and friends.
Ray was predeceased by: his parents Clara (nee Aucoin) and John Schumph; brothers: Clarence (Margaret), and Lloyd (Carm); and sister Thelma (Hilary).
Cremation has taken place and a visitation will be held on Sunday, December 3rd from 7:00-9:00 PM at Russell’s Funeral Home, Stephenville. A funeral Mass will take place on Monday, December 4th at 1:30 PM from St. Stephen’s Parish, West Street. Interment to follow at Hillside Interfaith Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
Throughout Ray’s illness, there have been a number of friends who have shown us what love and friendship really is. We didn’t have to ask for help, they came to us and told us how they could help: Ruth Doyle, Marg White, Joan Marche, Peggy Bennett, Joyce March, and our “son-like” neighbor, Jim Marsden, who has cared for Ray and Ursula as though they were his own parents. We would also like to Bruce Madore for going above and beyond in providing care to Ray, as well as the Bay St. George Long Term Care Centre in Stephenville Crossing and the Corner Brook Long Term Care Home.
