James Tolson Butt Obituary
James Tolson Butt (November 8, 1950-June 19, 2024)
With broken hearts the family of Tols Butt announce his peaceful passing in the presence of his loved ones on June 19, 2024, at the age of 74. He was a gentle giant with the softest heart who filled each day with humor, wit, wisdom and immense love.
Tols is predeceased by his parents James and Alma (Ash) and his brother John.
Leaving to mourn him with hearts full of memories of a life filled with love and laughter are the love of his life, his wife of almost 51 years Vina (Milley), his cherished sons Greg and Steven (Daniella; who he always called the daughter he never had), his only grandchild Ronan whom he adored (and who in his eyes could do no wrong…even when he did), sister Freda (Ralph Winsor) as well as a large number of nieces and nephews.
Tols will also be missed and remembered forever by the many people he met and befriended during his many years working in the bar and restaurant industry. His days running The Strand in the Avalon Mall, managing Bally Haly or as the owner of Harvey’s or Dougie’s Bar and Grill made him everyone’s buddy and gave him the opportunity to be a social butterfly, a role he excelled at. He is to this day referred to by many as their “favorite boss”.
Tols was quick with a joke, or a hug and our lives will forever be a little less bright without his warmth, generosity and unconditional love.
A special thank you to the staff at the Health Science Center for their compassion and care for the months Tols was there, as well as to Barrett’s Funeral Home for their support and guidance during the planning process.
Donations are welcome and can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society.
Visitation will be held at Barrett’s Funeral Home on Commonwealth Avenue in Mount Pearl on Sunday, June 23 from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00. Memorial service to take place at Barrett’s as well on Monday morning, June 24 at 10:00, followed by interment at the Salvation Army Cemetery on Blackmarsh Road.
