Henry Frederick Penney Obituary
With great sadness, we announce the unexpected passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Henry Frederick Penney, aged eighty, on Saturday, July 20, 2024. Henry was a man of few words, but his actions spoke volumes. He was a man of routine, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grandfather.
Henry was predeceased by his parents, John and Mary Ann; parents-in-law, Ralph and Huldah Neil; brother Melvin and partner Jean Morgan; sister Norma and brother-in-law Howard Gould; brothers-in-law Napoleon Dupuis and William Morrow and best friends for over 50 years Lorne and Heather Green.
Henry’s unwavering dedication to his family was a testament to his love and commitment. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 56 years, Shirley (nee Neil); loving children, Scott (Jennifer) and Susan (Erick) Medina; precious grandchildren, Emma and Lauren; brother Gordon (Huldah); sisters-in-law, Evelyn (Reg), Olive (Dave), Judy, Marlene (Brian); brother-in-law Clyde (Bev), special friend Brenda Shepherd, who supported and cared for Shirley, nieces and nephews, all other members of the Penney and Neil families and a large circle of friends.
Henry was very proud to have grown up in New Perlican. He started his 30-year career with the Newfoundland Telephone Company in Corner Brook, where he met the love of his life, Shirley. As a young couple, they moved to Bay Roberts and raised their two children, Scott and Susan, with support and endless love. Once his grandchildren Emma and Lauren came along, they became his everything. He thoroughly enjoyed watching them grow up and was their biggest champion in all aspects of their lives.
Upon retirement, Henry and Shirley were very fortunate to move to Florida for over 20 years, where they enjoyed spending time with their daughter, Susan, other family members and their close friends, Lorne and Heather.
In his younger years, he was quite an athlete; he enjoyed watching Western movies and sports events on TV. In most recent years, Henry’s greatest love and enjoyment came from taking care of Shirley, as he was completely devoted to her health journey. Henry’s love for Shirley was profound and unwavering. She was his everything. Henry never complained and always had a smile on his face because Shirley truly was his entire world.
At Henry’s request, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 73 Commonwealth Ave. Mount Pearl on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, from 2:00 – 4:00 pm and 7:00 – 9:00 pm. A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at 2:00 pm from Barrett’s Mount Pearl Chapel. Inurnment will follow at the Anglican Cemetery Columbarium, Forest Road, St. John’s.
We are grateful for your support and condolences during this difficult time. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made in Henry’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of one’s choice.
