It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gail French on Friday, October 20th, following a two-year battle with breast cancer.
Predeceased by her parents, Blanche (Knee) and Raymond Nicholas French, she leaves behind endless memories for her daughter Alison, who was the light of her life; brothers Dwight (Colleen), Derrick (Marie), and Keith (Elaine); nieces and nephews Jackie, Gary, Nicole, Nathan, Chloe, Kate, Patrick, Alexander, and Zachary; special family and friends Sharon, Bev, Gemma and John; lifelong friends Jackie, Ann, Wendy, Edwina, Ruth (deceased) and Barb (deceased); along with a large circle of treasured family and friends, including childhood friends from Smith Avenue, the Eastport gang and the volleyball community.
Gail conquered so much in her 61 years. She owned and operated Contemporary Florist for 35 years in St. John’s, and in true entrepreneurial spirit, was taking business calls late into her last hours. She put everything into her craft and this was reflected in the loyal clientele, with whom she developed lifelong relationships, both in and out of the shop.
She was a successful volleyball player, playing well into her fifties, and touched many hearts as a coach at St. Paul’s Junior High. She also treasured her weekends at the cabin in Brigus Junction and spent many mornings sipping coffee by the pond.
Gail’s greatest joy and accomplishment by far was being a mother to her daughter Alison. She never missed an opportunity to boast about her, and her face radiated pride and love whenever she mentioned Alison’s name. She was a devoted sister, sister-in-law and aunt and took on the role as matriarch of the family when her mother passed away. She was one of the greatest cheerleaders for all her nieces and nephews and was a fiercely loyal friend.
The family would like to thank the medical professionals from the Dr. H Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre, her oncologists Dr. Renee Lester and Dr. Joy McCarthy, Dr. Jennifer Stender, and especially Lori Metcalfe from Community Health who went above and beyond to care for Gail, as well as the palliative care staff at the Miller Centre who ensured she was comfortable on her last day.
To celebrate Gail’s life, visit Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Wednesday, October 25th from 2-4 PM and 6-9 PM. Funeral service will be held from the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Thursday, October 26th at 11 AM, with a burial to follow at the Anglican Cemetery, Kenmount Road.
As a tribute to Gail’s 35 years in the floral industry, flowers are gratefully accepted and encouraged.
