October 12, 1949 – May 30, 2024
Carl was born in Cook’s Harbour on October 12th, 1949. He was the fourth child born to Naomi and Hayward Strangemore. He had three brothers, Selwyn (Ivy), Charles (Gaye), Guy, and four sisters, Nita, Marilyn, Eva (Riley), and Joyce. When Carl was five years old, his family moved to St. Anthony where he grew up and spent his entire life. He worked most of his adult life in the processing sector with FPI in St. Anthony. In later years, he worked in the construction industry in St. John’s.
In 1971, he married Selma Ollerhead and together they raised two children, Luanne (Frank) and Shelley (Cory). They were then blessed with four grandchildren, Hilary, Nicholas, Cameron and Tyler. His grandchildren meant the world to him and there was nothing he wouldn’t do for any of them.
When Carl married Selma, he grew an extended family of brothers and sisters. There were many visits to St. Anthony by them all and there is no doubt that every visit with Carl was a memorable one.
Through the years, Carl grew many relationships that became lifelong friendships. Some of those friends became known as the Cabin Crew. This group had many a time playing music and singing, but what made them sound amazing was the best accordion player, Carl. He could brighten up any room with the sounds of the accordion playing and feet thumping. Music that all who knew him would cherish for a lifetime.
His passions extended beyond music, including boating, fishing, hunting, camping, master wine maker and gardening to name a few. I would expect that over the next few days, his family will hear some of the many adventures of Carl doing what he loved, and those stories will be nothing short of amazing and entertaining, because that’s the kind of person he was. Captivating, gentle, kind, witty, passionate, and of course, a little stubborn too.
Carl lived to see the passing of many of his family and friends; his mother and father, sister Nita, brothers-in-law, Tony, Roy, Ray, Earl and sister-in-law Loretta, along with his closest friends, Paul, George and Blanche and his best friend’s son Craig.
Sadly, Carl’s courageous battle with cancer ended peacefully on May 30th, 2024, while surrounded by his loving family. During Carl’s battle with cancer, he came to know many people that showed him compassion, empathy and support beyond what could ever be expected. The cancer care team in St. Anthony, along with all the nurses, physicians, and diagnostic service teams, all played a role in enabling Carl to have extended time with his family. There are too many people to name, but you know who you are, and you all held a special place in his heart! The man known as Dad, Pop, Husband, Brother, Brother-in-Law, Uncle, Cousin and Friend will be forever in our hearts and the memories he left will be cherished. Raise a glass to this amazing man and hear the accordion playing sweetly, Music and Friends! Love forever and always.
Visitation is being held at the funeral home in St. Anthony from 2-4 and 7-8:30pm Friday May 31st, 2024 followed by family prayer. The funeral service will be held at 11am on Saturday, June 1, 2024 from the St. Mary’s Anglican Church in St. Anthony with Rev. Arthur Kinsella officiating. Interment to follow.
