Shirley McGill – of Knoxville went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at the age of 77. Shirley was born on February 10, 1947 in Pineville, KY to Phillip and Mabel Cox and was the sixth of ten children. Shirley was a dedicated follower of Jesus Christ who loved attending church. She was a long-time member of Wings of Faith Church, and she loved to sing her Gospel songs. She passionately shared about her faith to all who entered her path. She also loved spending time with her family, especially in the mountains or at the beach. She was always ready to go on a ride or book a cabin in the Smokies! Her favorite holiday was Christmas, and she always looked forward to sharing the season with her loved ones! She was a great cook and loved providing a big meal when the family filled her house. You could always count on her to get you some hot tamales-she knew where the best ones were.
Preceded in death by parents, Phillip and Mabel Cox; daughter, Loretta Tolley; sisters, Ruby, Lorraine, Rosie and Anne; brothers, Buddy and Adam Cox; and brother-in-law, Buck Brown.
Survived by husband, Johnny McGill; children, Joanne (Cecil) Scates, Alice (Adam) Cole and Troy (Carri) McGill; siblings, Amos Cox, Darryl Cox and Pat Brown; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Shirley was a blessing to all who knew her, and she will forever be remembered for her strong faith in the Lord, her fierce love for her family, and her desire to have a warm, welcoming home for all her loved ones.
The family will receive friends 5:00-7:00 PM on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at Bridges Funeral Home followed by the funeral service at 7:00 PM with Pastor James Lay officiating. Family and friends will meet 8:15 AM on Thursday, February 29, 2024, at East TN State Veterans Cemetery for an 8:30 AM graveside service.
