John’s Obituary
It is with profound sadness that the families of John Edwin Hillier announce his peaceful passing on December 05, 2023 at the Western Memorial Palliative Care Unit in his 77th year. His battle with Interstitial Lung Disease in recent years showed his courage in facing life challenges with a smile and he stayed strong until the end.
John was born on August 06, 1946 in Grand Bank, Newfoundland. He was the oldest of eight children. John grew up in Cormack and remained in Cormack for many years before moving to Deer Lake. John was known by many and went by many names including Johnny, Inch, Ed, Edwin, dad, uncle and his most favorite title, Poppy John.
John was a proud father of his two children, his daughter, Kimberly Barrigan (Rob), his son Peter Hillier (Valerie) both who reside in Alberta. John was also very proud of and loved his grandchildren Liam, Isabel, Felix and Sebastian. John will also be lovingly remembered by his close friend Gwen House of Corner Brook. John is also survived by his brothers Freeman (Judy), Derek (Dawn), Tom, and Aubrey (Teena), his sisters; Melvina (Gerard) Philpott, and Brenda (John) Hillier, his sister-in-law Doris Hillier, his nieces and nephews and many extended family and friends. John was pre-deceased by his father Betram Hillier and his mother, Mary Hillier (nee Cornish) and his brother Bert Jr.
John was a dedicated professional, contributing over three decades of service to the government of Newfoundland Department of Highways. After retiring from the Department of Highways, John embarked on a new chapter by driving taxi at the Deer Lake airport, a role he found joy in with social interactions, meeting new people, and traversing the various corners of the island. This post-retirement endeavor not only allowed him to explore his love of Newfoundland but also left a positive impact on those who had the pleasure of crossing paths with him. In addition to his 12 years of taxi driving at the airport, John extended his friendly services for an additional 2 years, being a taxi driver around the Deer Lake area.
John followed in his father’s footsteps at the Royal Canadian Legion in Deer Lake and was a lifetime member, volunteering in various capacities such as 1st vice president and serving on the executive committee for many years. Most will remember him through his role of calling bingo at the Legion for over 25 years. When not working or volunteering, John could be found at the Tim Horton’s having a coffee with friends, playing darts with friends or out enjoying the outdoors hunting, fishing or enjoying a ride on his quad.
John’s family would like to thank the staff of the Deer Lake Manor for the care provided to him over the past year. We would also like to thank the doctors and staff of the Western Memorial Palliative Care Unit for making John comfortable and relaxed in his final days.
As per John’s request, there will be no visitation, cremation has occurred and there will be a service and celebration of life on Friday December 15th, 2023 at 2pm at the St. George’s Anglican Church in Cormack Newfoundland with Rev. Gosse officiating.
