Irene Susie Elizabeth Campbell Phillips, was born in Toronto Ontario to Colin Cyril Campbell and Iva Ione Flint on 7 June 1920. The oldest of 5 children, she helped with all household duties and cared for her siblings.
On 19 October 1940 Irene married Thomas Phillips. They met when she was 16 and Tom was willing to wait until she grew up to marry her. They had 63 years together.
Throughout her life she ministered to many about her. Her listening ear was sometimes all they needed. She might even give counsel whether or not it was requested!
Irene made many friends along her life path. Many of those friends she kept in touch with for decades. They were truly friends for life.
She was a good homemaker, a loyal wife, friend, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
She knew some correct principles, lived by them and taught them to others.
Eating right was an important aspect of her life. “If it comes from a plant , eat it. If it’s made in a plant don’t eat it. ” Having said that, she also loved sweets!
Irene loved her family! She always wanted to know what was going on in their lives.
Irene stood by Tom in life and in his passing. She followed him during his military service in WW II and across Canada from Ontario to Saskatchewan, supported him in his major career change from mortar to ministry, typed many essays long into the night, and worked to support our family while Dad went to university. She moved house multiple times, not owning her own home for decades.
And then in Imperial SK she helped Tom build their retirement home sided with rocks from farmers’ fields. Irene spent almost 50 years living in Imperial; the longest she ever lived anywhere. She loved the people of Imperial.
On 25 April 2024 in Imperial, Irene moved on to the next phase of life where there is more opportunity to progress and learn.
What would she want us to do? In her autobiography she stated that she wants us to ” be kind to one another” and to remember that “Love is the most important thing there is.”
