Gladys Sweitzer passed away October 8,2024 at the age of 106 Years. She was eighth in a family of ten born to William and Jennie Owens. Gladys was predeceased by her husband Louis Sweitzer, Sons Obert Sweitzer, Rees Sweitzer, Daughter in Laws Judy Sweitzer, and Sonya Sweitzer, Son in Law Bill Sinnett and grandson Christian Sweitzer as well as eight of her nine siblings. She is survived by one sister Betty Fry, daughters Gail Sinnett and Janice Morgan (Allen Morgan), Son Don Sweitzer (Jody Sweitzer), Daughterin-law Muriel Sweitzer, along with 13 Grandchildren, 30 Great Grandchildren, and 6 Great Great Grandchildren.
Gladys married Louis Sweitzer June 30,1938. Their family grew and thrived in a difficult era. Having lived through the depression years they had their love for each other and a strong desire to succeed. Louis was first employed as a grain buyer for Western Grain Co. at $100.00 per month. Mom was a faithful partner supporting Dad in all that he did. Family began with Gail in 1939 and Janice in 1940. Rees arrived in 1942 and Obert in 1945. The final addition was Don’s arrival in 1951.
Mom was a wonderful homemaker. She was always busy tending to all the needs of a growing family. Cooking and cleaning of course but also an accomplished seamstress. There were always occasions requiring outfits for special days. Mom could always sew beautiful outfits out of old repurposed outfits, she always seemed to have stored away. She never wasted a lot of money on them but her creations were always top notch. Mom nurtured us into responsible adults, taught us work diligently towards our goals, taught us to care for our communities and love and respect our families. Our family has been truly blessed to have her as a dedicated mother.
Soon after we were out on our own, Louis’ health deteriorated and Mom had to do what she could to help out. They worked together at the Rural Telephone Company and Mom learned lots about record keeping and balancing the books etc. After a few years she was employed at the Community Clinic Medical office and really enjoyed that roll until the office closed. Next stop she was asked to be the coordinator of the newly formed Eston Plus 50 Club. Mom worked for the plus 50 until Dad’s health worsened and she needed to be home. Dad passed away January 20 1982. Soon after Gladys took on the role of Librarian at Wheatland Library. She loved the kids and met may new people. She stayed at the Library till Dec.30 1989 when she made one of the biggest decisions in her life. She left her roots and the only home she had ever known. After 71 years she decided to set herself up for some new opportunities. We were so proud of her. She did many things with new friends and old friends. She made difficult choices that most often made her life better. What a brave and smart lady she was to take charge for herself.
The Family would like to thank all the Staff at Samaritan Place Saskatoon for the wonderful care she received.
Funeral will be held Saturday October 19 at St Andrews United Church, Eston, Sk at 2:00 PM.
Pastor Doreen Hewitson Officiating.
Martens Warman Funeral Home is honoured to be entrusted with Gladys care.
