Norman Russel Kirk has “Gone to A Better Place;” gone to be with his heavenly family. Normie passed away peacefully at the Gull Lake Special Care Home on Wednesday, February 7, 2024. He was born on July 9, 1930, at the farm to Christian & Hazel Kirk. He was the 7th of 8 siblings. Normie went to school at Dama then Gull Lake and upon finishing school, he took a barber course, which he was not fond of. He had many different jobs over his life, one was taking soil samples for Geo Chemical Survey of Dallas, Texas. Percy Harvey and he walked over a span of 9 townships from Webb to Tompkins digging thousands of deep holes with hand augers.
Normie farmed with his brother-in-law Bill Baumann, moving to Gull Lake in 1961. He married Irma Plewis in 1962, which later ended in divorce. He owned the Pool Hall which he purchased from Kelly Holtby, which later he sold and started to do Carpentry. He also volunteered to work with the fire department, working his way up to the Fire Chief. Normie was also an honorary Elks member.
In 1980 he moved to Richmond, BC working there as a carpenter. After a couple years he came back to Gull Lake and continued doing carpentry and working for some of the local farmers in the area. Normie loved being social and cutting his teeth on playing cards as a child until the age of 93. He really enjoyed fishing with his buddies. He loved going every Sunday to the Looney Pond, which was owned by his friends, Bill & Frances Voll, here he helped cook breakfast for the neighbors that joined.
He was always fascinated by the big Windmills south of Gull Lake and would spend hours out there learning as much as he could about them, maybe sometimes getting in the way of the workers. He was a man of few words and had a keen sense of humor. He could be moody, cheeky and very stubborn, some might say “bull headed”. One work Normie didn’t understand or like was the word “NO”. He did what he wanted, always dancing to the beat of his own drum, but he could also be kind, good-hearted and gentle.

Norm’s only remaining sibling, Doris Kirk Anderson said, “He was a great brother and that she looks forward to seeing him again”. She also wanted to express her deepest appreciation to nieces Tish, Carola & Davida for their untiring care and support.
Normie leaves his sister Doris and his nieces & nephews to carry on. We the family would like to thank “ALL THE STAFF” at the Gull Lake Special Care Home; the Autumn House & Dr. Clare Kozroski for all the great care he received. We would also like to thank Parkside Funeral Home for all their help. Last but not least we wish to thank his good friend Wayne McAuley for being there for Normie and our family. A Normie’s request there will not be a funeral service. Arrangements are in care of Parkside Memorial Funeral Home – Ryan Cappelle & Hayden Cappelle.
