Ruth Pryce
January 5, 1929 — September 24, 2024
The Gorin/Axten family is saddened to announce the passing of their beloved mother Ruth Pryce at the age of 95. Ruth passed away peacefully at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, surrounded by her three biological children on Tuesday, September 24th.
Ruth was born on January 5th, 1929 to Effie (Kent) Freethy and Ernest Freethy in Hafford, Saskatchewan. She grew up on her parents’ farm close to Hafford and attended Whiteberry, a one room rural school, until the completion of grade 10. She finished her high school education at Speers and Hafford and attended normal school in 1946-47. Ruth began her career as a teacher in a one room multigrade school called Bygland in Ordale Saskatchewan. She then taught in Langham, Battleford, Prince Albert, and Edmonton before settling in Saskatoon. In Saskatoon she taught in the primary division of Westmount School for four years.
She married Philip Gorin in 1956 and raised a family of three – Robert, James, and Patricia. In 1975 she returned to teaching half-time. Ruth had a special interest in remedial work in the primary grades at the King George, Buena Vista, Roland Michener, Sutherland, River Heights, and Wilson schools in Saskatoon. In 1985 she returned to full-time classroom teaching at Caswell School.
Retiring in 1990 she began enjoying her winters in Mesa, Arizona. She married Don Pryce in 1997. Ruth loved her family cabin at Turtle Lake, reading, writing stories and poetry, painting, dancing, and music. As a dedicated mother, she felt her greatest accomplishment was to co-produce and raise to adulthood three children who are contributors to society. Ruth’s love for the family cabin at Turtle was enhanced by the opportunity it gave her to experience sunsets, northern lights, starry skies, moonrises, and the migration of so many birds whose flightpaths were over the lake.
Ruth’s love and devotion to her family was unfaltering. She was very proud of all of her family, her stepfamily, and their accomplishments. She was particularly proud of her children Robert Gorin (Anke), James Gorin (Helena) and Patricia Axten (Craig), her stepchildren Cliff Pryce (Yvonne) and Diane Wiker, her grandchildren, Jessica, Remus, Chelsia, Christopher, and Sean, her step-grandchildren, Kevin, Dave, Brad and Sean (Adrienne) and being “GG” to her great-grandchildren, Aubrey, Caleb, and Felicity and step great grand children Addy and Grayson.
Ruth was grateful to Saint Volodymyr’s Villa and its staff for the T.L.C. she enjoyed, and the many friendships she made while residing there. In lieu of sending flowers, Ruth’s wish is that those who remember her, recognize her passing by doing something that nourishes such as watching a sunset, dancing, finding Orion in the night sky, hugging a loved one or friend, cuddling a baby, eating a dessert, marvelling at a “V”formation of geese, or celebrating the good luck of living in Canada.
