John Lahey-Wiggs
March 20, 1961 — August 20, 2024
It is with a deep sense of loss that we share the passing of our husband, father and brother, John Anthony Lahey-Wiggs on August 20th, 2024. He went to be with God and his family who passed before him during the warmest part of summer which was one of his favorite times.
Living at Samaritan place in Saskatoon SK, there was much respect and caring for the wonderful person that he was. He passed peacefully with his wife and son at his side. He had endured so much over his life but rarely complained and for this he was admired, respected and given great empathy by those who cared for him. He was predeceased by his father, Dr.James Wiggs, and his mother, Mary Anne Wiggs (Bernard) and younger brother, Kevin James Wiggs. He is survived by his youngest brother Adam Buhmann-Wiggs (Anita) and sister Chala Lechner ( Tom) as well as several nephews and nieces.
John was born March 20, 1961 in Indianapolis Indiana. His father was training as a neurologist and was in the US Air Force which allowed John and his family to travel around the central and Midwest area ending up in Yankton, SD. At 17, he was diagnosed with a cerebellar Astrocytoma. It was unusual at his age but with the support of family and friends he recovered and succeeded in graduating from high school then getting his Polysomnography certification, followed by a Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography and a Masters degree in Audiology. It was during his Masters program that he met Carol at University of South Dakota. The couple married at St. Annes parish in 1997, then moved to South Dakota where John completed his Audiology requirements. They relocated to Oregon in 1998 and had their amazing and very loved son Michael in 2001.
Life was enriched by John’s love of photography for which he was rarely seen without a camera in his hand. He also had a very strong interest in hunting and fly-fishing and went on simple trips to pursue this. He had a cochlear implant placed which improved his quality of life for some time, in addition to the sweetest Guide dog, Opal. Unfortunately, his neurological difficulties over time did not allow him to continue outdoor hobbies and eventually work. These were the darkest of days for us all. John was the kindest and most caring of gentle men. He loved nature and the outdoors, had a very strong sense of justice, was quiet unless something needed to be said, and had a secret sense of humour with those he cared about the most. His eye for photography was special – he was proud but humble about this. He fought the bigest battle with two kinds of cancer but eventually succumbed to the effects of Cobalt cancer treatment that saved his life at 17. His final and greatest gift will always be the donation of his corneas to the Organ transplant program. We hoped his passion for what he saw through his camera would be gifted to someone in need.
John will always be remembered by his family and those that knew him over the years. In lieu of flowers, we humbly ask for you to consider being an Organ donor and to speak to your family about your donation wishes. Alternately, please consider making a donation to the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency.
The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, September 27, 2024 at 11 a.m. at St. Anne’s Roman Catholic Church (217 Lenore Drive)
