Fred Herron

Frederick (Fred) Herron, born on July 1, 1944, during a hailstorm in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan to Bill and Gladys Herron passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to education, community and family. He was the youngest of four children and began his schooling in Dollard at the age of four. He graduated high school in Shaunavon, attended Teachers’ College and embarked on his teaching career at age 19. His first teaching position was in Cadillac, Saskatchewan. Around this time, he met Fay Maki and they married and started a family.
In the early years of his career, Fred combined his passion for education with his love for sports, coaching, and playing senior ball and hockey. He was the School Principal and taught in Climax and Frontier, participating in local teams such as the Climax Clippers, Climax Cardinals and Frontier Flyers. From the beginning, Fred was actively involved in the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation (STF), serving as an elected member of the Executive.
Fred’s career took a significant step in 1977 when he became the Director of Education for the Eastend School Division. In 1983, the family moved to Saskatoon, where he rejoined the STF as an executive assistant, representing the Northeast region. He later ascended to the role of General Secretary of the STF, where he played a pivotal role in founding the Dr. Sterling McDowell Foundation for Research into Education and was instrumental in the success of Greystone Capital Management Corporation, which invested the Teachers’ Pension Plan funds.
After the tragic loss of his wife Fay in a car accident, Fred found love again and married Joan Ward. Fred retired from the STF 28 years ago and continued his service to education as the Executive Director of the Superannuated Teachers of Saskatchewan. His lifelong commitment to public education and the well-being of teachers extended not only throughout Saskatchewan and Canada but also internationally.
In retirement, Fred cherished his time with Joan and with family and extended family. He and Joan traveled and stayed at their cabin at Cypress Hills Park where they loved entertaining family and friends. They joined the Friends of the Park and were instrumental in establishing the observatory and rebuilding the park hall after a fire. An avid bridge player, Fred achieved the status of Life Master and was a dedicated supporter of the University of Saskatchewan Women’s Basketball team, regularly attending games with Joan.
Fred is lovingly remembered by his wife and best friend Joan Herron; children Shaun (Bevi) and Shalene Herron (Shayne Burwell); Joan’s children Adrienne Harder (Chris) and Clarke Ward (Denise); grandchildren Josh, Cole, Teneille, Taylor, Dion, Dane, Masyn, Maclaren and Ridley; great-grandchildren Carter, Olivia, and Gibson; his sister Nora and her family; as well as many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Fred’s life was a testament to his enduring passion for service to others, teaching, community, and making a positive impact. His contributions will be felt for generations to come.
