Eva BURCHBY Obituary
Eva Alice Burchby passed away peacefully on May 24, 2024 at the Elrose Health Centre at the age of 96. She was born on March 14, 1928 on the family farm near Smiley, Saskatchewan to Ludwig and Barbara (nee Boschman) Ternes. She attended elementary school at Victory and high school in Smiley. In 1947, she married Harvey Burchby, who was also from the Smiley area and for a few years they lived and farmed there. In 1958, the family moved to Rosetown. There, Eva worked various jobs, as a waitress and at the bakery. In 1963, after the twins were born, they moved to Zealandia, where they lived for many years. In 2006, Eva moved back to Rosetown. Due to failing health, she moved to the Elrose Health Centre in 2014.
Eva is survived by her sons Ron (Rebecca), David (Laurie) and daughter-in-law Therese, 11 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, 9 siblings, Harvey, her husband of 53 years, sons Ken and Dennis (twin to David), daughter Lana and 2 grandsons.
First and foremost, Eva loved her family and was a great mentor to her children and grandchildren, developing personal connections with each one. She loved having her family around and hosted many Sunday family dinners, busy in the kitchen while at least a dozen grandchildren sprawled on the living room floor watching the Disney show and after supper, the cards or the rummoli board came out. Hers was a busy, crowded house, full of delicious aromas and laughter.
Eva was a hard worker and accomplished many things in her life. Whenever possible, she worked outside the home. In 1969 she went to work at the Rosetown Union Hospital as a housekeeper and then as a nursing aide, working there for more than 20 years. She had found her calling. She was a compassionate, warm hearted caregiver and loved her job. Eva was a kind and considerate person and loved nothing better than visiting with friends or strangers, it didn’t matter to her. She could and would talk to anyone about anything. She was a people person.
She had many interests, loved to garden, sew, travel, go fishing and crochet. Each of her children and grandchildren have at least one big afghan to keep them cozy. She was a great cook and volunteered her time and home made pies wherever needed. She has always been a cornerstone for the family, to support, encourage and inspire and Mom, Grandma, Gigi will be missed.
