July 31, 1929 – August 15, 2024
Claude Everett Smith, aged 95 years of Moose Jaw, SK passed away peacefully Thursday, August 15, 2024, in Memory Lane at Pioneer Lodge with his family by his side. He was predeceased by his parents, Claude and Edith Smith; sisters, Velma and brother-in-law, Scott Starrak, Mildred and brother-in-law, Bob Binner; and brother, Jim Smith. Ev is survived by his wife Darleen of 64 years, daughter Shauna (Clayton Breault and their 4 children Ashley (Jeff), Jesse, Laine (Madi) and Elektra (Weston) and 3 great grandchildren Kassi, Rigg and Kruz), son Doug Smith (Debra Havanka and his son Kallan) brother-in-law Brian Larmer (Coby) and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ev was born on July 31,1929 in Moose Jaw to Claude and Edith Smith. He was the 4th born in his family. Mildred and Velma were his older sisters and brother Jim. After being named after his father Claude they chose to call him by his middle name. Ev stuck for life and some probably didn’t realize it wasn’t his birth name.
Ev attended Eastview School in a one room schoolhouse. He then attended Peacock Technical High School but unfortunately 2 weeks before graduation he suffered from a ruptured appendix this kept him from graduating.
Pumping gas at a service station kept Ev busy before taking over the farm with his brother Jim and then eventually farming on his own.
Marriage came a year after a blind date in September 1960. Ev and Darleen were married February 18th, 1961. Their daughter Shauna was born July 18, 1962, and their son Doug November 11th, 1967.
Ev was an avid curler. He first started curling with his father and then with his own rink for years. He had many good stories of curling and the fun they had while doing it. He was so passionate about curling he even coached and taught Shauna’s high school curling team.
Ev and Darleen retired from the farm and enjoyed life. Together they enjoyed antique auction sales and always found a good deal. Ev refurnished many beautiful pieces of furniture over the years. His garage was his workshop, and many hours were spent making furniture beautiful again. Many pieces can be found in his family’s homes. He found a great passion for Intarsia; you didn’t dare call it woodworking as he wasn’t going to have the reputation of just a retired farmer who picked up a chisel and a stick! His creations were intricate and unique. His grandchildren looked forward to Christmas and birthday gifts from grandpa.
The family would like to thank all the staff at both the hospital as well as Memory Lane in Pioneer Lodge for the exceptional care Ev received. Also, a thanks to the Palliative Care coordinator Tyler as well as Dr. Thorpe for going above and beyond their call of duty.
A Memorial Service for Ev will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. in the Harvey Room at Moose Jaw Funeral Home.
Arrangements are entrusted to Moose Jaw Funeral Home, 268 Mulberry Lane. Andrew Pratt, Funeral Director 306-693-4550
