Gourlay, Gwendoline Mable “Gwen” – It is with great sadness and much love that we say goodbye to our beloved Mom and Nana, Gwendoline Mable Gourlay (nee Daly) who passed away November 27, 2023 at the age of it 85 years old.
She was a strong and determined lady, with a beautiful giving heart. She was a competitive athlete in many sports over her lifetime including speed skating, baseball, bowling, curling and her golf swing was wicked!
Her life was full of family and friends and the meals prepared for these lucky people were happily consumed, she was a wonderful cook. There was never a dog or cat that got by her that didn’t get a treat, or birds, or chipmunks…she fed them all.
Gwen’s passion was gardening, and this was apparent by the care she took and the beauty and colour her gardens displayed. Gardening is about the past, the present and the future—and the connections we make between them, thank you Mom/Nana for passing this down to all of us.
Gwen is lovingly remembered by daughters Karen Despot (nee Remarchuk) & Georges, Brenda Cherniak (nee Smeltzer) & David, and son Brian Smeltzer. Grandson Brett Cherniak, Granddaughter Megan (nee Cherniak) & Charlie Briggs. Sister Gene & Jack Malloy, Brothers Jack & Lyn Daly and Ray & Jan Daly. Her nieces and nephews Jeff, Todd, Cory, Trevor, Tracy, Chris, Braden & Jessica will surely miss their birthday cards.
Gwen was predeceased by her husband Ronald Gourlay, March 2020 and the love of her life, husband Michael Remarchuk, September 1997.
Cremation has taken place and a private celebration of life to be held. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Mark Prodger and the HCSS Palliative Nurses for their kind and comforting homecare. The family would also like to extend a special thank you to the wonderful staff at the Woolcott Wing of the Welland Hospital who cared so much for Gwen during her time there.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Gwen’s honour may be made directly to Canadian Cancer Society.
