JONES, David Thomas – It is with thankfulness for a life well-lived that we announce the death of David Thomas Jones on Monday, October 2, 2023, in his 83rd year. He is survived by his wife, Liz Wightman, his sons, George Alan (Sue Willett-Jones)) and Bryan (Karen Sorley) and his grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Brayden and Liam. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and their families. He was predeceased by his parents, Florence and William Jones, his brothers, Bob and Buck as well as their wives, Hope and Anne-Louise and his nephew, Mike Jones.
Most of Dave’s working life was spent as a dedicated Grade 7-8 teacher, specializing in Science but teaching most subjects along the way. During his 33-year career, he taught in just two schools, Ft. Erie Elementary and Prince Philip in Niagara Falls.
In his spare time, Dave had many pursuits. He was an amazing carpenter, building everything from beds to cabinets to kitchens and he was especially known for the many clocks he created for family and friends. In his youth he was a high-ranking Boy Scout and Rover, he played tuba in the school band and enjoyed a High School football career at Stamford Secondary School. In later years he was an enthusiastic tenor in the Harbour Lite Singers as well as the choir at Central United Church, where he was an active member for many years. He loved to bake especially at Christmas and was famous for his shortbread, Christmas cake and the family Welsh cakes. He and Liz enjoyed many wonderful travelling adventures in Canada, the US and Europe.
Dave had a 12-year journey with dementia, eventually diagnosed as Alzheimer’s disease. The disease took so much from him, but despite its relentless progression, he maintained his dignity and gentle manner to the very end.
Many thanks go to the PSW’s and other medical staff who cared for Dave both at home and at Royal Rose, where he spent his final year and a half. Also many thanks to family and friends who helped to keep him active in the community and who made it possible for him to live at home for as long as he did.
