Johanna Castledine Obituary
With sadness we announce the passing of Johanna Castledine at her home on Saturday, December 28, 2024 at the age of 93. Beloved wife of the late George Hooey, and the late David William Castledine. Also predeceased by her dear parents Piet and Jantina Van Vuure and her sister Niesha Gooding. Loving mother of Charles VanVuure Hooey (Elizabeth), Tina Hooey-Gelhard (Roland), Dianna Brooks (Gary), and Cheryl Near (the late Earl), and grandmother of Jason Hooey, Jake Gelhard and Matthew Gelhard.
Johanna emigrated from Holland with her family after the war to eek out a new beginning in Canada. As a young teenager she boarded a steamer to the westward shores with all her hopes and dreams that this new land promised. Eventually she met a charismatic man, got married and started a family. Life was good. He was a good provider and she was a loving mom. Johanna survived two caring husbands and was instrumental in starting two new business ventures. She often said that she has to thank her guardian angel for giving her the opportunity to have such a long and good life. Johanna kept to a very small circle of friends tending to focus more on her kids. Johanna often carried on in ways that would make you feel like a kid, but in her defence, she said, “A Mom never stops being a Mom”. A clean and tidy household was a regiment born of her Dutch heritage. Perhaps the only person who would be heard routinely vacuuming after the cleaning lady departed the house. She loved flowers, the garden, reading and her loyal dog companion. She loved nature and had a keen interest in the mysteries of creation and humanities distant origins. God blessed Johanna with a chance to spend some joyous time with Great Grandchildren who will certainly miss this kind lady whose smile and cheer welcomed their visit.
We all miss you, Mom. May you be in God’s embrace now and forever.
Cremation has taken place, and Johanna will be laid to rest with her parents at Waterdown Union Cemetery.
