James Bruce Nicholson Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Bruce Nicholson on March 5th, 2024, at Milton District Hospital at the age of 82. He was surrounded by the love of family.
Bruce was born on August 21st, 1941, in the small village of Kilbride to Helen (Ford) and Jabez Nicholson. He considered himself fortunate to have lived most of his 82 years in Kilbride. Bruce was the epitome of a jack-of-all-trades. He worked as a mechanic for many years, servicing the Nicholson Sunoco Gas Station on Guelph Line, and St. Joseph’s Motherhouse in Hamilton. Bruce was also a proud founding member of the Kilbride Station 5 Volunteer Fire Department. He found his calling when he purchased a fly-in fishing camp, Nemegosenda Lake Lodge, in Chapleau, Ontario. For 13 years, he and his wife Susan hosted many guests and created lifelong memories for those who became regulars at the Lodge. In 2012, at 70, Bruce received a new set of lungs via organ donation. This blessing allowed Bruce to begin living his life again and gave us the gift of 12 more wonderful years. Bruce’s interests and hobbies varied. He was an auctioneer, pilot, hunter, taxidermist, embroiderer, world traveler, baseball fan, and even a Y&R enthusiast. For us, he was the steadfast head of our family and a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Susan (Smith) Nicholson. His children Neil (Darlene) Nicholson, Sherry (Michael) Lauter, Paul (Tracy) Nicholson, Kelly (Colin) Thomson, and Tracey (Colin) Bentley. His grandchildren Tabatha (Jeremy) Herrgott, Maddison (Sean) Goolabsingh, Eric (Tyler) Nicholson, Steven (Margeaux) Lauter, Emily Lauter, Jesse (Alex) Nicholson, Brianna Nicholson, Dylan (Megan) Nicholson, Tyler Jooris, Aidan Ropchan, Josh Thomson, Kyle Thomson, and Paige Bentley. And his great-grandchildren Brighton, River, Colby, Theo, Robin, Emma, and Miles. Bruce is also survived by his sisters, Edna Joyce and Barbra (Ron) Hanson, and brother-in-law, Neil (Judy) Smith and Sandy (Wendy) Smith. Bruce is also survived by his former wife Pat Nicholson, and many nieces and nephews.
Bruce is predeceased by his parents, Helen and Jabez; his sister, Marie McCartney; his brothers, Gordon and John Nicholson; and his sister-in-law, Donna Dugas.
Friends may visit with the family at KITCHING, STEEPE & LUDWIG FUNERAL HOME, 146 Mill St. N Waterdown, on Friday, March 22nd, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.; a private family funeral will follow. Cremation has taken place.
A special thanks to the doctors and nurses at Milton District Hospital. And a heartfelt thank you to Bruce’s niece, Pam McFadden, for all of her support and care. In lieu of flowers, the Nicholson family would like everyone to consider registering as an organ donor at beadonor.ca
