Anna “Anne” Marie Turnbull passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at the age of 96 after a full life, with many years spent living on the shores of Colpoys Bay.
Anne was born in 1927 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to parents Dmytro and Katherine Kowalchuk. Anne was a big help on the family farm where vegetables were grown as well as mink and fox. She learned to drive her father’s truck in the 1930s, in an era when women did not drive.
When a jersey cow required medical aid on the farm she met the love of her life, the attending veterinarian Robert “Bob” Blake Turnbull, who would later become her husband. They moved to Ontario in the 1950s raising their two sons, Richard and Ken. Anne assisted Bob with his veterinary business answering the phones and talking with sales reps.
To know Anne was to enjoy her unique laugh and many classic expressions like, “You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink!”, “That’s just not cricket” and “Ole’ pappy time is picking my pocket”.
Her dedication to the Wiarton Hospital Auxiliary was inspiring. She volunteered for 35 years, starting as a candy striper, then working in the gift shop, followed by selling tickets in the grocery store.
She loved taking care of her many gardens growing vegetables and flowers and made delicious homemade pickled beets and jams. She was strong, stubborn, and fiery, splitting her own wood into her 70s, taking the stairs two at a time into her late 80s and would throw a snowball at you if you ever doubted her abilities!
Anne is survived by her son, Richard, daughter-in-law Diane, grandchildren Kevin (Kelly) and Lesley (Paul) and her five great grandchildren Lucas, Miles, Ozzie, Willow, and Van.
She is predeceased by her husband Bob, son Ken, and brother Stan.
Thank you to the wonderful staff of Brucelea Haven Nursing Home, HCCSS, Alzheimer Society Grey-Bruce, Dr. Diodati, Maureen Smith and Wray Lamont who helped to care for Anne when she needed it most.
The family would love to hear your personal stories about Anne, and encourage you to post them on her memorial page at www.cameronfuneralhomes.com
A celebration of life will take place in late May in Wiarton. Details when available, will be announced by Cameron’s and published in the Wiarton Echo.
A private family interment was held in United Church Cemetery, Grand Bend.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to Wiarton Hospital Auxiliary or Brucelea Haven Activation Fund are encouraged by the family. Donations and condolences may be made online at www.cameronfuneralhomes.com
