LUKES, Richard – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Richard Lukes on Friday, April 5th, 2024, in his 75th year. Beloved son of the late John and Betty Lukes. Predeceased by loving wife Rosemary Lukes. Together they shared three beautiful children: David Lukes (Carolyn), Melinda Ferguson (Anthony) and Kenneth Lukes (Michelle). Richard will be dearly missed by his beloved grandchildren; Lyla, Nicholas and Iver. Survived by siblings; Marion Brett (Tony), Ann Herrick (Martin) and John Lukes (Debrah).
Richard was born in Kenilworth, England and lived his formative years in Greenville, South Carolina where he participated in the first integrated Prom and watched Martin Luther King march down the street. Richard applied to the Royal Canadian Airforce in 1969 and was accepted to their Flight Training Program.
Richard was a proud Pilot with the Royal Canadian Airforce and was known as Major Richard Lukes (now retired) to many. Richard’s career spanned 28 years and included involvement in Desert Storm, United Nations functions within Rwanda, peacekeeping in the Bosnia and Sarajevo conflict, Director of the 1996 8 Wing Trenton Air Show, and Chief Flight Instructor and Chief Standards Officer within the 426 Squadron. Richard concluded his career as the Deputy Commanding Officer of the 426 Squadron.
After Richard’s retirement he was a man “out standing” in his field. He built his dream car with his two sons: a 1967 Ford Shelby Cobra and tinkered in his garage with his friend Ken Pfander.
Richard was very much loved by his family and friends and is now at peace with his beautiful wife Rosemary.
A heartfelt thank you and deep appreciation goes to Richard’s palliative care team.
Arrangements entrusted to RUSHNELL FUNERAL HOMES – BELLEVILLE, (80 Highland Ave .613-968-5588). To honor Richard’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Richard’s Life will be held on Saturday April 27th, 2024, at 2:00pm at Richard Lukes’ house (Frankford). If desired, memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Canadian Neuroendocrine Tumor Society would be greatly appreciated by the family.
