MAY 2 – 1936 – September 9, 2024
With sadness in our hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved patriarch Ron Garant who left us peacefully on September 9, 2024 at the age of 88. Ron was devoted to Valerie, the love of his life, his wife of 64 years having celebrated with dinner out a few weeks ago. He was a loving father to Bruce (Cheryl) and Gayle. He was so proud of and loved his grandchildren Michael (Kirsten), Brian (Nadia), Emma and Lacey – his grandpup who will mis her nightly belly rubs. Affectionately known to all as Poppa – his family meant the world to him – almost as much as horse racing and poker even though his bets rarely paid off. He made the best chili ever. Christmas always included his traditional tourtiere. Every year we raided the freezer hoping to find one he forgot about. He loved country music and Charles Aznavour. He worked s a Film Editor with the CBC for over 45 years, retired then decided to drive a limo as he loved to drive. He was an Usher at Maple Leaf Gardens in 1952 and a few years later he met his true love Val who was there working the Ballet. He continued to work at MLG until 1973 to make sure his son got a job there at age 11 (shhhhh – he was supposed to be 12!) He was a horrible painter – see the back of house on Gage Ave. He was an extra in the movies and taught line dancing with Valerie until Covid. He traveled the world.
He lived a full and wonderful life for 88 years – the last few thanks to the amazing people at Scarborough Centenary Hospital and Providence Palliative Care Unit. He was the poster boy for chemo dealing with 4 different cancers for over a year and a half. He loved going out for a meal with friends or family, the off-track betting and poker at the neighbours. The T.V. was always on the horse racing channel (yes – there is one!), he hated to shop but always came home with a special treat for his wife Valerie. He said he didn’t like animals but then you’d find him snuggling Lacey who he lovingly referred to as “his girl”. He was fun, stubborn, silly, sweet, kind, loved to tease and loved to nap in his recliner. We were so lucky to have Poppa in our lives. He was so well cared for by all and we are truly grateful he was able to live his life to the fullest and then it was time to rest – he did so peacefully,
A private mass will be held for family. A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, September 29, 2024 from 2 – 4 pm at 43 Angora Street. Please join us to toast and share memories.
