It is with profound sadness that we share with you the passing of Bob on January 25th, 2024, in his 86th year. Beloved husband of Elaine (nee Bigham) for 60 years. Cherished father of Rob, Heather and father-in-law of Paul Gorbould. Dear Grandpa of Ava and Grace Gorbould who adored him and gave him great joy. A kind, generous and loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle. Family was always Bob’s number one priority. Born in Hamilton, Ontario to the late Mary (McLean) and William Cook. Predeceased by sister Bessie, brothers John (Beatrice) and Bill (Christine). Survived by his brother Dave and wife Pauline, sister-in-law Marjorie Johnstone, brother-in-law John Bigham and wife Sofie along with numerous nieces and nephews. He will be deeply missed by all – relatives, friends, neighbours and former colleagues.
Education was Bob’s true calling. After attending Hamilton Teachers’ College and teaching one year in Hamilton, Bob joined the East York Board of Education in September 1960 where he was a teacher, V.P. and Principal for 36 years. At Westwood Jr. High, a young school secretary caught his eye. Bob and Elaine were married June 29th, 1963 and moved to beautiful Guildwood Village in 1966 where they raised their family and made so many lifelong friends.
Music, golf and sports were Bob’s passions along with gardening and tending to his beautiful roses. He was a member of the Scarborough Choral Society for over 20 years as well as the Toronto Choristers. Giving back was also important and he volunteered with many organizations over the years including fundraising for Parkinson Canada and working with True Davidson Meals On Wheels East York where he also served time as Chairman. On his retirement in 1996, he founded the annual RTO District 24 Breakfast ‘Fore’ Kids Golf Tournament with proceeds going to needy schools in both East York and Scarborough for their breakfast programmes.
Bob’s happy and positive outlook on life was just one of his many admirable qualities. The glass wasn’t half empty or half full. With him, it was full up to the brim and overflowing. In spite of his various health issues, he faced them with courage, strength and humour. There was always the proverbial smile on his face and he never failed to thank each and every caregiver. A special ‘thank you’ to all those in the medical profession for your expertise and wonderful care of Bob over the past 5 months – Scarborough Centenary Hospital, Margaret Birch Rehab and Chartwell Guildwood. To family, friends and neighbours – sincere thanks for all your love and support.
As per Bob’s wishes, there will be no service. Cremation has taken place. Family and friends will gather together to celebrate a life well-lived at Scarboro Golf and Country Club in June.
If desired, please donate to Parkinson Canada or the Toronto Star Santa Claus Fund.
