Jim Bays, 105 years old, passed away peacefully on October 26, 2023 at Sunnybrook Veteran’s Wing. Jim was deeply loved by his son, Don (Norma), daughter Alison (Rob Vandenberg), grandchildren Steve Bays, Keely Bays-Egri (Paul Egri), Erica Mills (Craig Mills), Emily Greene (Jason Green), seven great grandchildren – Knox, Jed and Boone Mills, Norah and Chloe Green and Eliana and David Egri and nieces and nephews. Jim is predeceased by his wife of almost 75 years, Muriel, brother Bert and sister Madeline Kershaw.
Jim was born in Toronto on January 20, 1918. After high school, Jim joined the Armed Forces, eventually inspecting aircraft to ensure they were fit to fly. During WW 11, he was posted to Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and inspected aircraft for convoy duties across the North Atlantic. After the War, Jim returned home and married Muriel Holloway. He then worked for Canada Bread, driving a horse drawn delivery truck with his horse, Bess, until he rejoined the RCAF with a promotion to Sergeant, ultimately attaining the rank of Chief Warrant Officer. Jim’s lengthy Air Force career included two around the world trips, delivering supplies to Canadian embassies. After retiring, Jim was employed as a customs office at Toronto Pearson Airport until retirement.
Jim loved reading, doing the Toronto Star daily crossword puzzle, playing bridge and always stayed physically fit. He was a top bowler, played soccer in his youth, loved curling and playing golf and badminton. He was also a softball umpire and competitive swimming coach. Jim had close connections with family and friends, was very sociable, kind and generous and valued higher education.
Jim was a very responsible man and wonderful husband, father and grandfather. We all loved his quick witted jokes and banter. Jim was loved by all who met him, will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
Those who want to make a donation in Jim’s memory are asked to consider the Salvation Army, Scott Mission or a charity of your choice.
We want to thank the staff at Sunnybrook Veteran’ Centre for their excellent care and compassion.
