Eckhard Sperling passed away peacefully on January 23, 2024, in Toronto, Ontario. He is
survived by his wife Christel, their children Stefanie and Matthias, and grandchildren Trinity,
Kiya and Simone.
Eckhard was born in Marienwerder, Germany on January 11, 1941, and grew up in Frankfurt
(Höchst), with nine other siblings. He studied Mechanical Engineering and met his wife
Christel on a skiing holiday. They were married in Germany in 1968, then travelled to
Canada for what they thought of as a one-year working honeymoon. Toronto quickly
became their permanent home.
Eckhard took great pleasure in his work as a mechanical engineer. He worked with a number
of engineering firms in Toronto (Vulcan, Lurgi, Ceeco), during which time he helped design a
tow truck mechanism that is still in use today. He specialized in the design of machines used
in the wire and cable manufacturing industry and in 1986 founded his own company,
Cabletrade Industries Inc., where he was an inventor of two patents, for a wire twisting
machine and a wire casing process. He later developed international partnerships and
consultancies in his industry with firms including Pourtier (France) and Bartell Machinery
(NY, USA).
Eckhard was very proud of his children and also very devoted to his granddaughters, whose
growing up he and his wife have been an important part of. He was jovial and warm with
people he met, often enjoying chuckling and joking. He loved driving (always a German car,
of course), and loved his favourite foods: especially a particular barbeque chicken from St
Lawrence Market, and salmon sushi, which he was a devoted fan of. He enjoyed travel,
hiking and camping, as well as occasionally playing the violin.
The family deeply thank the many professionals who cared for Eckhard during his long
illness with Alzheimers, first at home, then at Kensington Gardens long term care home.

Eckhard wurde am 11. Januar 1941 in Marienwerder geboren und wuchs mit neun weiteren

Christel im Skiurlaub kennen. Sie heirateten 1968 in Deutschland und reisten dann für eine
ihrer Meinung nach einjährige Arbeitsflitterwochen nach Kanada. Toronto wurde schnell zu
ihrer ständigen Heimat.
Eckhard hatte große Freude an seiner Arbeit als Maschinenbauingenieur. Er arbeitete mit
einer Reihe von Ingenieurbüros in Toronto (Vulcan, Lurgi, Ceeco) zusammen und half dabei,
einen Abschleppwagenmechanismus zu entwerfen, der noch heute verwendet wird. Er
spezialisierte sich auf die Konstruktion von Maschinen für die Draht- und
Kabelherstellungsindustrie und gründete 1986 sein eigenes Unternehmen, Cabletrade
Industries Inc., wo er zwei Patente für eine Drahtverdrillungsmaschine und ein
Drahtummantelungsverfahren erfand. Später baute er in seiner Branche internationale
Partnerschaften und Beratungsunternehmen mit Firmen wie Pourtier (Frankreich) und
Bartell Machinery (NY, USA) auf.
Eckhard war sehr stolz auf seine Kinder und widmete sich auch sehr seinen Enkelinnen, an
deren Heranwachsen er und seine Frau einen wichtigen Anteil hatten. Er war fröhlich und
warmherzig im Umgang mit Menschen, denen er begegnete, und lachte und scherzte oft
gern. Er liebte das Autofahren (natürlich immer ein deutsches Auto) und liebte seine
Lieblingsspeisen: vor allem ein besonderes Grillhähnchen vom St. Lawrence Market und
Lachssushi, von dem er ein begeisterter Fan war. Er reiste gern, liebte wandern und
camping, und spielte gelegentlich auch Geige.
Die Familie dankt zutiefst den vielen Fachkräften, die Eckhard während seiner langen
Alzheimer-Krankheit betreut haben, zunächst zu Hause, dann in dem Langzeitpflegeheim
Kensington Gardens.
