Obituary for
Phillip Sutherland
It is with great sorrow that the family announces the sudden passing of Phillip on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at the Timmins and District Hospital at the age of 48 years. Beloved brother of Douglas Kebokee (Flora), Raymond Kioke (Sandra), Beverley Kioke, Marina Kioke, Nicole Haggerty (George), Bunny Sutherland, Faith Underwood (Jeff), George Sutherland Jr. and Crystal Jacobs (Ken). Uncle to Natasha, Ashley, Johnny, Courtney, Rainah, Amanda, Brynne, Joshua, Victoria, Jessica, Daniel Jr, Gabrielle, Morgan, Kyra, Brianna, Jonathon, Kallen, Haleigh, Melissa, Emily, Jeffrey James, Shawn Dre, Abigail, Liam, Gracie, Miya, Mercy and numerous great nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents George and Josephine Sutherland, his grandparents Philip & Margaret Sutherland, Gabriel & Agnes, brother Dominic and nephew Kingston.
Phillip also leaves behind his Lawrence Street Family in Porcupine, where he resided for 25 years with the CRTC. Throughout the years, there were multiple staff that worked with Phillip daily, with a few that worked with him while he attended school at Roland Michener. He will be greatly missed.
Phillip survived 47 years with a traumatic brain injury which occurred when he was 14 months old. His mom advocated for him on a daily basis. Having a brother like Phillip taught his family empathy, advocation, patience and most of all, love. His many hospitalizations taught them resiliency and it strengthened their family bond. As Phillip grew older, he became heavier and stronger. So, the decision was made to admit him into assisted living.
Although Phillip couldn’t walk or talk, he could maneuver on the floor as well as say certain phrases. He had nicknames for his sisters as well as key phrases he would say daily. His parents also gave him a few nicknames that stuck well into adulthood. “Beep the Speep” and “Binipagee” were the ones his siblings would say when they visited. He’d also remember someone if they greeted him with a “Wah See You and A Wah See You.”
Visitation will take place on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 from 11 am to 1pm. Funeral Service will be at 1:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Cremation will follow. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the MIRON-WILSON FUNERAL HOME, Cremation and Reception Centre, 150 Balsam St. S., Timmins.
