Kathryn Eleanor DeBackere
November 20, 1963– April 7, 2024
After a decade long fight with breast cancer, Kathy lost her battle and passed in her 60th year. She passed peacefully surrounded by her loving family at home. Kathy was born in Montreal and grew up in Toronto until meeting her husband in school at Sir Sandford Fleming College.
Predeceased by mother Eleanor and survived by father Stewart MacNeish. She will be deeply missed by her husband Jerry of 35 years. Proud mother of her children Nathan, Jessica (Michael), and Emily. “Nonnel” will be missed by her new granddaughter Aislynn.
Sheryle Westcott and Cameron MacNeish (Ann) will miss their little sister. She will be missed by all her nieces and nephews.
Kathy dedicated her early career to the Ministry of Natural Resources, and assisted in fighting forest fires in Northern Ontario. She was a member of the Ontario Flue-Cured Tobacco Growers’ Marketing Board for 10 years. She was very grateful for her loving team at the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA).
Kathy had a bright, sharp, and insightful mind. She was a pillar of strength and guide for her entire family. In private, she was an avid reader and talented artist. She enjoyed board games, especially Apples to Apples night with good friends. She formerly coordinated youth programs in Northern Ontario, and later was a strong advocate for the Tillsonburg Lightning girls’ hockey.
Kathy was a type one diabetic for most of her life and did not let illness slow her and persevered through every hardship. Special thanks to the care of the Palliative Care Outreach Team (PCOT) making her very comfortable in her final moments. In support of Kathy, please donate to the Diabetes Canada Foundation, or Tillsonburg Public Library.
Friends and relatives will be received at Ostrander’s Funeral Home, 43 Bidwell Street, Tillsonburg (519-842-5221) on Thursday April 11, 2024 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm. The Liturgical Service will be held at Ostrander’s Funeral Home at 1:00pm on Friday April 12, 2024 in the Chapel with eulogies starting prior to the service at 12:45pm. Cremation to follow.
