L. David Cooper
January 7, 1953- July 20, 2024
On a textbook summer day, the light is gone and the warmth is missing – Dave Cooper has passed. Dave leaves behind his very best friend of nearly 48 years, his wife Marjorie (nee Vander Hoeven). He was an original “Girl Dad” to his daughters Candace Cooper (and her husband Robert Westman), and Jillian Cooper (and her husband D. Simon Jackson) – he was the best dad ever. Dave was a middle child, brother to Robert Cooper (and his wife Rosmery), and sister Deborah Cooper. He was also the funnest of uncles to his many nieces and nephews. Dave was predeceased by his loving parents Lorne and Evelyn (nee Clifford). Dave put in many years of hard work with Bell Canada, proudly repairing telephone pay phones, as well as cable and telephone lines, and was a past president of the charitable organization the Telephone Pioneers. Over his lifetime, Dave had numerous talents and interests, all of which he approached with precision and thoughtfulness. He enjoyed many sports, including golf, baseball, and hockey (which he played elbows up, of course – Go Leafs Go!). Through a love of history and genealogy Dave discovered that he was a descendant of a United Empire Loyalist, Josiah Gilbert. After retiring from Bell, Dave doubled-down on his life-long passion for photography. He graduated from the New York Institute of Photography in 2009, following which he continuously travelled with Marj across Canada, the US and Europe – capturing forgotten graves, abandoned buildings, historic treasures, stunning waterfalls and enduring landscapes. A mentor to several amateur photographers, Dave’s images were the focus of his book West of the Mississippi and they adorn the walls of many homes, allowing Dave to use his passion to bring joy into to the lives of so many others. He won the 2010 Photolab contest, and was published in Photo News Canada. On Saturday, July 20th, 2024, Dave peacefully left us surrounded by his loving family at the age of 71, after a long and brutal fight with a mean disease that robbed him of his memory, and eventually of life itself. Life will never be the same again. Though his memory may have failed him, the memories he created for so many will never fail us. His legacy and life lives on in Marj, in Candace, and in Jill – in all lives he enriched, too many to count. A private graveside service will be held for Dave at the Tillsonburg Cemetery. There will be a celebration of life held for Dave in the coming days. The date and time will be announced on the Ostrander Funeral Home Website. Memorial donations to the Alzheimer’s Society can be made online directly or via cheque payable to the charity by contacting Ostrander’s Funeral Home.
