De Cloet, Daniel “Dan” (December 9, 1939 – November 27, 2023)
Passed away peacefully, after a courageous struggle with illness, Daniel “Dan” De Cloet, formerly of Tillsonburg, surrounded by the love of his family, at Queen’s Village Retirement Home, London, on November 27th, 2023, at the age of 83. Dan was born in Aarsele, W.F., Belgium. Dan, his brother “Gabe” and his father Omer De Cloet emigrated from Belgium in June 1953 to start a new life in Canada. After the three De Cloets worked very hard as farm field labourers in the Langton area, they saved enough money to bring over (to Canada) their mother Maria and the young siblings: John, Paul, Alphonse, Luke, Ben, Mary, and Rita. Being the oldest of 9 children, at the age of 14, he played a very important part in helping to provide for this large family. He knew his role as the oldest brother and maintained that all of his life. He always remained a leader for the other siblings, being the drive behind the annual De Cloet Christmas and guiding the event. This came naturally to Dan as he loved to cook for others and eat well. He was a bit of a “softie” as he loved on his kids and grandkids. Being kind and generous was very easy to him. He had a great sense of humour, during good times and bad, which carried him a long way. Through his gentle humour and charisma, he won the hearts of the staff at Queen’s Village, his last home.
Dan was a creative “inventor” of sorts and loved to manufacture new things, starting with the DeCloet tying machine and priming machine, then a greenhouse automatic plant puller, automatic tobacco harvester, tobacco topper, and later portable classrooms. His last project was hobby greenhouses. He was known as a very tenacious and hard-working man. Dan loved to work outside with gardening plants, all sorts of flowers, and shrubs. He took great delight in the beautiful flower beds around his home and yard, often starting the transplants in his own small greenhouse that he designed.
Dan was predeceased by his much-loved wife Simone (De Groote) De Cloet (August 14, 2015). He is lovingly remembered by his six children and their families: Mark (Cathy) De Cloet, of London; Kristina (Shane Hodgetts), of Aylmer; Ed De Cloet, of Stratford; Natasha De Cloet, of St. Thomas, Chantal (Caleb) Matheson, of Simcoe; Danny DeCloet, of Woodstock. Dear grandfather to 13 grandchildren and great grandfather to 6 great-grandchildren. He is survived by his brothers: Paul (Josiane) De Cloet, Tillsonburg; Alphonse De Cloet, Brantford; Ben De Cloet (Brenda VanQuathem), Booth’s Harbour; his sister: Mary McElhone, Langton; his sister-in-laws, Mary (John) De Cloet and Hilda (Luke) De Cloet, and brother-in-law Pat (Fran) McElhone, Simcoe; by many nieces and nephews and several cousins in Belgium. Predeceased by his brother Gabe De Cloet (March 28, 2022) and his wife Virginia De Cloet (May 25, 2004), his brother John De Cloet (June 2, 2014), his brother Luke De Cloet (May 29, 2007), his sister Rita McElhone (Sept. 21,2008), and also by his grandson Chad McBride (November, 1999).
