Peter Yurkoski, a lifelong resident of Thunder Bay, died September 15 at the age of 94. Peter was born on Island No. 2, now Mission Island, at the mouth of the Kam River, on October 27, 1929. With his friends he fished, hunted rabbits, swam and skated around the island, and attended Isabella and Selkirk schools. As a young man he worked at bush camps on Lake Nipigon, on tugboats on Lake Superior and at Consolidated Dredging. In 1949 he married Kay Kraiger and then studied for his journeyman electrician’s papers. For a few years he ran a repair business, Superior TV Radio & Hi Fi. Afterwards he worked at Mahons, the Ontario Hospital, Ogilvies and Great Lakes Paper. On retirement, he and Kay lived for a few years at Amethyst Heights, then moved back to live in the city and enjoy their camp at Wild Goose. He also travelled to visit family in B.C., New York, Arizona, and Southern Ontario. He was predeceased by his wife in 2012 but rebounded to enjoy life with new friends at Jasper Place, and with his good friend, Janette Potvin. He also enjoyed following the Leafs, Blue Jays, and Vikings games.
Peter was also predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Mary, siblings Ann, Frank, Bill, Steve, and Kay. He is survived by sisters Jean and Nancy, son Ron (Barbara), grandchildren Christopher and Nicole, and five great-grandchildren.
We love and miss you, Dad. Thanks to the caring staff and friends at Jasper Place who went above and beyond to support Peter through the health challenges of his last year, and to the staff of 3A in the TBRHSC who were so kind and understanding.
Cremation has taken place and there will be a service held at Blake Funeral Chapel on Thursday, September 19, 2024 at 11:00am, celebrated by Rev. Msgr. P.M. Stilla V.G.
If so desired, donations made to the TBRHSC in Peter’s memory are greatly appreciated.
