It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our husband, father, and grandfather, Norman J. Mason, on January 29th, 2024.
Norman was born in Sand Lake, Ontario, on March 31st, 1939, and he spent his life in the area he loved dearly, the Almaguin Highlands. Despite seeing a great deal of the world through travel, he was proud to live and raise a family in Burk’s Falls. It was there where he grew up, played sports, delivered lumber, became a teacher, and met the love of his life: Marilyn Parsons.
Norm was a great athlete, and he loved all sports, but his favourites were basketball and hockey. He was an accomplished basketball player who led North Bay’s Garland Pepsis to a Northern Ontario Championship in 1959. His love of hockey led him to a lifelong commitment to his beloved Chicago Blackhawks. He could be found on a Saturday on Burk’s Falls’ main street heckling others in jest over NHL rivalries. Despite his incredible competitiveness, he was also kind, compassionate and very civic-minded. Norm deeply loved Burk’s Falls, the Province of Ontario, and Canada. He spent many years as Reeve of Burk’s Falls and was active in politics.
Norm and Marilyn were married on Boxing Day, 1961, and spent the next 62 years together. Together, they built a family, careers, and a business. Norm taught for many years and ultimately rose through the ranks to become Vice Principal, Principal, Superintendent of Program and Director of the East Parry Sound Board of Education. In his private life, he had a deep love for his family and for automobiles. He touched many lives with his infectious charisma and energy. He will be sorely missed.
Norm is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his sons, Mike (Amy), Rick, Sean (Rosalind), and Randy (Grace); his grandsons, George, Thomas with Julia, Jack, and Owen; and his granddaughter, Mei.
Norm requested there be no funeral. There will be a private celebration of life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, please donate to the charity of your choice in Norm’s memory.
