Roger Richard Obituary
Roger Émile Richard
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Roger Richard, a man who has touched the lives of so many. On the evening of August 19, 2024, he passed away peacefully sitting on his favourite recliner after having fallen asleep doing one of his favourite things, watching a Blue Jays game.
Roger was the beloved son of the late Joseph and late Thérèse (Lapointe) Richard. Loving husband to Marilyn Richard (Vaillancourt). Cherished father to Nathalie Richard (Gregory Quirk) and Michelle Richard (James Robinson). Caring grandfather (known as “Pépère”) to his 4 grandchildren, Olivier, Alexandre, Portia and Scarlett. Dear brother to Lucille Salach (Henry), Berry Biederman (Rick – predeceased), Juliette Richard (predeceased in infancy), Joseph Richard and Mark Richard (Sibylle Haller). He will be profoundly missed by many nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and neighbours.
Roger was born in Kapuskasing and grew up in Jogues/Hearst and Manitouwadge. Growing up he loved to play outdoor hockey and other sports. From a young age he developed a strong work ethic and loved talking about how, at the age of 12, he would wake up at 5 am to go milk cows at a local farm for 25 cents.
Roger obtained his degree in the arts from Laurentian University. His professional career was launched at Retail Credit as an investigator. Roger then worked as an Employment Standards Officer for 25 years with the Ontario Ministry of Labour, where he investigated and decided the outcome of claims for wages and other employment benefits. His curious mind, problem solving skills and mediation abilities helped him to excel. He applied a fair and thorough process, leaving no stone unturned.
Roger resided in Val-Caron since 1973. He was an avid sports fan of the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Blue Jays, having organized many bus trips for community members to attend games. You could often find him playing guitar, listening to music, reading a book about investing, real estate, sports, or doing a crossword puzzle. After having retired, Roger and his wife enjoyed travelling. He was a family man that enjoyed as much time as possible with his family.
Roger had a heart of gold. His kindness, caring nature and generosity touched the lives of everyone he met. He was always there to help if need be, for family members, friends, neighbours and even complete strangers. His legacy will continue to shine in the hearts of those he knew and helped.
Roger served as a member and volunteer with the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 76, and many other charitable endeavours over the years. In lieu of flowers, donations in honour of Roger can be made to the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 76. A gathering for a celebration of Roger’s life will be held at a later date.
