Lavoie, Theresa (née Friske) 1938 – 2024
Theresa “Terry” Lavoie (née Friske), a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend, passed away peacefully in Sudbury, Ontario, on November 18, 2024, at the age of 86. Surrounded by the love of her family, she was reunited with her beloved husband, André “Andy” Joseph Lavoie, and many dear relatives, including her parents and 11 siblings, who predeceased her.
Terry’s enduring legacy lives on through her children: Yves André (Karen), Jerry-Allen (Jeanine), David (Monica), Danielle (Ken), Leonard (Roxanne), Lori-Ann (Michael), Melanie (Dennis), as well as her adopted children Ernie Fowler (Michelle), Mary-Ann Fowler, and Lisa Lavoie. She also leaves behind a large and loving family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom carry forward the warmth and love she gave so freely.
Born in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan, Terry spent her early years on the family farm before moving across the country with her mother as a teenager. Eventually, she made her way to Ontario, after being wooed by and then marrying Andy. Together they built a life full of love and laughter with a family including lots of children.
Terry’s heart and soul were devoted to children and her love for them knew no bounds. In addition to raising her own seven children she adopted/permanently fostered three more children and ended up nurturing and cared for over 65+ others throughout her work with the Children’s Aid Society. Her nurturing spirit extended beyond her immediate family, touching the lives of nieces, nephews, cousins, and so many others. She was a mother to many, always offering comfort, guidance, forgiveness and a kind word when needed most.
While Terry’s memory may have faded in her later years, her sharp wit and infectious laughter remained ever-present. She had a gift for finding humor in life’s simplest moments, and her giggles would light up a room whenever she found something amusing. Those who knew her best will remember her love of life’s small joys such as reading a good book, savoring a homemade meal, or spending time outdoors. She often spoke fondly of her childhood on the farm and her beloved horse, Babe. Now, in our hearts, we can imagine her once again riding free, joyfully reunited with the animals and loved ones she held dear.
The family is deeply grateful to the compassionate staff and caregivers at Pioneer Manor in Sudbury for their kindness and support, ensuring that Terry was comfortable and cared for in her final years.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Children’s Aid Society of Canada, a cause that was so close to Terry’s heart.
A celebration of life for extended family and friends will be held at a later date, to be determined. Cremation arrangements are entrusted to Theoret-Bourgeois Funeral Home.
Terry’s love, kindness, and indomitable spirit will be forever remembered by all who knew her.
