Obituary
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Arnold Gerard Vandewiel at the age of 90 on Thursday, November 23, 2023. Born in Klundert, Netherlands on October 14, 1933 to the late John Vandewiel and Sophia van der Heiden. Predeceased by his first wife Joan (Nyssen) Vandewiel in 1985 and his second wife Wanda (Carmichael) Vandewiel in 2003.
Dear father of Gary, Joe (Renna), Alanna (John Poel), Robert (Tammy) and Brian (Sheri). Loving Opa of Tonia (Brad) and Melanie (Terry); Tony, Amanda (Jake), Josie and Caleb; Matthew and Michael; and Jessica (Cody) and Jacob. Cherished Great-Opa of Adalynn and Emily; Ruby and Ryder; Lyra; and Lennia.
Survived by sister Kitty van den Kieboom and sisters-in-law Anneke Vandewiel, Ann Vandewiel, Veronica Vandewiel, Nelly Meyer and Fran Nyssen and many nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by siblings and in-laws Bets (Mees) de Lint, Wim van den Kieboom, Gerard Vandewiel, Harry Vandewiel, Toon (Magda) Vandewiel, John Vandewiel, Nel (Felix) de Koning, John (Pat) Nyssen, Arnold (Mary) Nyssen, William Nyssen, Bert Meyer, Matthew Nyssen, Tina (Brian) Lawrance and great grandson Gordie Merkel.
Arnold immigrated to Canada in 1954 after graduating from Agricultural College. He worked on many farms, before purchasing his first farm in 1970 in the Stratford area. He will be fondly remembered by numerous clients in Southwestern Ontario from his many years at Western Ontario Breeders and in sales at several poultry hatcheries, retiring at the age of 80. He was also instrumental in the early years of St. Willibrord (Libro) Credit Union, serving on Stratford’s branch council and loan committee.
The funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, November 25 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 96 Huron Street, Stratford, with visitation to be held at the church at 10:00 a.m. Burial at Avondale Cemetery, followed by luncheon at St. Joseph’s Parish Hall.
