Obituary
Jean (nee Ross) Hogg, of Port Elgin, ON, died Sunday March 10, 2024 at the age of 96.
Predeceased by her beloved Buddy, Jean will be missed by her daughters Heather (Peter Rausch) of Edmonton and Betsy (Ron Palko) of Port Elgin. Her grandchildren Michael and Amy Rausch, and Amanda (Nik Pinski) and Lauren Palko adored her, and Jean certainly enjoyed the antics of her great grandchildren, Misha and Colby. Jean’s sister Marian (Harold Smith) of Halifax will miss her dearly.
Jean grew up on a farm in Pictou County, Nova Scotia. After attending business college, she worked in New Glasgow where she met her future husband Bud (William). After marrying in 1950, they lived in Halifax and Montreal while Bud pursued his education and their children were born. They settled in Noranda QC and made many life long friends there while Jean was active in her church and community. She was well known for her delicious meals and her adventurous cooking. She was especially renowned for her baking skills. There were many requests for her famous crescent rolls, lemon meringue pies and especially cookies made only at Christmas. Jean and Bud moved to North Bay and then Toronto, where they lived for 20 years while Bud continued his career as an exploration geologist. Sarasota FL became their winter home and they were active in their Siesta Key community. For the last 23 years, Jean and Bud lived in Port Elgin, where she enjoyed spending time with her family. She loved visits from her children and grandchildren. FaceTime kept her in touch with far away family and friends, especially her only sister Marian in Nova Scotia. Her great grandchildren, Misha and Colby, brought her great joy, and she loved laughing with them.
To celebrate her life and share remembrances, her family plan to have a private gathering this summer. Jean’s family would like to thank Dr Khan for his care, compassion and support, especially during Jean’s final days. Thank you to Dr Somerville as well as the nursing staff at the Southampton Hospital Palliative Unit who provided wonderful care for her. We also acknowledge and appreciate the Elgin Lodge staff who were always so caring and thoughtful.
