Obituary of Ted Kassay
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Tibor (Ted) Kassay on August 20th, 2024 at the age of 91.
He was the proud father of two children David Kassay and Michele (Fortuna) and proud grandpa to Kyle, Melissa, Clarke and Matthew. Ted will also be missed by his step-son Chuck Manuelian and his two great grandchildren, Kane and Natalia. He leaves behind several sister and brothers’ in-law, and many nieces and nephews.
Ted was predeceased by his wife Iris, his parents Paul and Margret Kassay, brother Paul , his sister-in-law Peggy and his sister Muncie.
Ted lived a full and interesting life.
He loved fishing with everybody, anytime. Ted rarely missed any football, hockey practice or game, dance class, golf and an opportunity to chauffer the grandkids. Family trips are lovingly remembered as being centered around fishing.
He will be remembered by the community of Crystal Beach and Town of Fort Erie for his numerous achievements, including being “the milk man”, a butcher and owning the The Derby Food Market/IGA, later building and operating Ted’s Restaurant, introducing “Tim Horton’s” to the town of Crystal Beach, rebranding Smeader’s Loganberry and the construction of St. George’s Court subdivision. He was also instrumental in the development of the waterfront park and boat launch, created “KrystalDorf”, an Alpine village featuring the “Alps Fest”, with activities such as the hilarious bed races, and the popular Christmas Shoppe. (Ted loved to dress as Santa for the children that came to visit), and his final achievement was creating Melissa’s Aloe-Pet.
He also had a successful real estate career, spanning several decades.
Ted enjoyed talking to people at his aloe shop in the “Red Barn Flea Market” while he lived in Sun City Centre, Florida, where he worked until he was 84!
Ted served on Fort Erie town council for 2 terms early in his adult life, where he campaigned to revitalize his beloved Crystal Beach.
Ted and his brother Paul will be remembered for driving the volunteer ambulance as part of their services associated with the Crystal Beach Kinsman Club, where he was past president and a life time member, and was instrumental in the building of the senior’s apartments in Crystal Beach with the Kinsman as well.
Ted passed peacefully in Welland where he lived his final years cared for by the kind, compassionate staff of Royal Rose Nursing Home, who the family wishes to thank for their loving care.
A Catholic mass will be held at St. George Roman Catholic Church in Crystal Beach on Thursday, August 29th at 11 am. Online condolences may be made at williamfuneralservices.ca
