Luigi’s Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Luigi Mesto (aged 89) on July 10, 2024 at the Red Lake Margaret Cochenour Memorial Hospital with his family by his side.
He is lovingly remembered by his children Maria Wiskemann and Ernie Mesto (Kim), his granddaughters Dorianna, Natalya, Adrienne and Julia, his great granddaughters Hallie and Rylee, his sister Cecilia Lastella, his brothers Giuseppe Mesto and Antonio Mesto and many in-laws and new nieces and nephews.
Luigi was predeceased by his beautiful wife Antonia, his parents Maria and Ernesto Mesto as well as many siblings and his in-laws.
Luigi was born in Bari, Italy in November of 1934. As the fourth of nine siblings Luigi took his role in the family very seriously. From a young age, he was dedicated to supporting his family, embodying a strong work ethic and deep sense of responsibility.
In 1958, driven by love and the promise of a better life, Luigi moved to Canada to marry his beloved wife Antonia. The couple settled in Red Lake and Luigi began a career in the area mines. Luigi was a miner by trade and worked equally as hard at his home garden. Often Luigi could be found tending to his plants, meticulously caring for each flower, vegetable and shrub with the same precision and devotion he brought to his work. His garden was a testament to his love for nature and his unwavering commitment to nurturing life.
Luigi and Nina’s enduring love and partnership spanned more than 40 years, during which they built a life with love, joy and countless cherished memories. Their family began with their two beautiful children Maria and Ernie who blessed them with four granddaughters and two great granddaughters. Luigi ensured that his family never went without. He made sure there was food on the table for those that visited and provided a warm house for all to come home to.
The veranda chats and visits to his basement to admire his moose racks with a glass of wine will forever be cherished.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, July 15th at 1 pm in the Red Lake Royal Canadian Legion with Father Justin Eze officiating.
A private interment will follow.
