Gerald Bryant Edwards, born April 23, 1932, passed away peacefully at Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay, Ontario on February 28, 2024. Known by all who loved him as Gerry, his singular sense of humour and tremendous gift for storytelling will be greatly missed. He is predeceased by his daughter, Sharil Ann Edwards (1966-2018), and leaves behind his wife, Shirley Ann Edwards (née McCullough, b. 1932), his daughter, Mary Margaret Wilson (née Edwards b. 1967), son-in-law David Reginald Wilson (b. 1965), grandson Alec Ross Wilson (b. 1992), and granddaughter Sarah Joan Wilson (b. 1996).
Gerry grew up in Algonquin, Augusta Township, Ontario, where his father, Ross (1898-1982), and mother, Violet (née Smith, 1903-1998), made their family home. The Edwards boys, John (1929-1999), Sydney (b. 1930), Gerald (1932-2024), David (1933-2008), Raymond (1938-2017), and Thomas (1941-2017), and their sister, Margaret (1939-2018), remained close siblings throughout their lives. The many cousins in the next generation of the Edwards family have grown up knowing the joys of a connected family. Gerry was also blessed to have close and enduring ties to his sister-in-law, Mary, and brother-in-law, David Lingley, as well as his niece and nephew. Summers spent at the cottages on Butternut Creek and Canal Lake were filled with good food, fun, and laughter.
As a young man, Gerry was proud to have earned his teaching certificate from Peterborough Normal School and his Bachelor of Arts degree from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. He began his teaching career in a small, rural, mixed-grade school before taking a post at Princess Elizabeth School in Niagara Falls, Ontario, where he met and fell in love with Shirley, his wife of 67 years. Gerry enjoyed his students and the work of teaching and guidance counselling, but what he treasured most were the friendships he made through teaching, especially a lifelong bond with fellow educator Robert (Bob) Jamieson, his dearest friend. Over the years, through a friendly Ticats-Argos rivalry, curling matches, rounds of Euchre, visits to each other’s homes and vacations in the sunny south, Bob and his wonderful wife, Lee, became central to Gerry and Shirley’s life together. The children of both couples remain close all these years later – a testament to the enduring Edwards-Jamieson bond.
Following his retirement from teaching at Stamford Collegiate, Gerry and Shirley relocated, first to Bolsover, Ontario before settling in Bobcaygeon, where they were happiest surrounded by nature and kind friends and neighbours. As his health declined with age, Gerry was enormously grateful for the compassion, company, and comfort provided by Christie Hall, Brittany Kuipers, Jessica Kuipers, Jayne Dlouhy and other care-givers over the years.
Visitation will take place on Saturday, March 16th, 2024 from 12:00 noon with a service to follow at 1:00 pm to be held at Ross Funeral Chapel, 135 Walton Street, Port Hope, Ontario L1A 1N4. A family burial service will follow at a later date at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Maitland, Ontario.
