EGLI: Hans – It is with profound sadness that the family of Hans Egli announce his peaceful passing surrounded by family after a courageous and brief battle with cancer on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at the age of 78 years.
Hans was born in Frauenfeld, Switzerland on November 22, 1945. He moved to Canada with his family at the age of 13 to Blackstock and then in the early 1960’s to a farm in Philipsburg.
Beloved husband of Rose-Marie (Therrien) Egli who predeceased him on December 17, 2020 after 54 years of building a loving life and family together. Loving father of Michelle Egli-Shantz and Chris Egli and partner Sonya Livingston. Cherished Papa and forever missed by his grandchildren Megan Shantz & fiance Trevor Ryan, Jared Shantz, CJ Egli and Sierra Egli. Hans is survived by his brother Bruno (Deb) Egli, sisters Myrta Dietrich, Dagmar (Dennis) Meyer and Monica (Brian) Todd and by his brothers and sisters-in-law Theresa Wilton and Catherine (Don) Smith, Clifford (Mary) Therrien, Mickey (Susan) Therrien, Garry (Patsy) Therrien, Leonard (Debbie) Therrien.
Predeceased by his parents Hans and Agnes Egli, his daughter Angela (in infancy), son John (1996) and son in law Perry Shantz (2018), his father and mother-in-law Leonard and Alma (Hamelin) Therrien, brothers and sisters-in-law Don Dietrich, Orval, Gordon, Francis, Allen, Pat, Stanley Therrien, Diane Therrien, Lucille Therrien, Eleanor Therrien & Wes Wilton.
Hans was a hard worker all of his life from hoeing turnips to all duties on the farm to the Butcher Shop. He built silos for Kitchener Silo for a few years then to Schneider’s on the slaughter line. Then in August of 1977, Hans along with brother Bruno moved the family business to Baden and Egli’s Meat Market became a well know shop for quality meats and European cold meats. Egli’s was in business for 45 years before they sold and retired.
During his years living in Wilmot Township, Hans was a member of the Baden Chamber of Commerce, Baden Optimist Club and Foxwood Golf Club for many years. Hans enjoyed his car drives with his buddies that always included a stop for lunch somewhere. He enjoyed golfing with the Morningside group and enjoyed playing Rook and Sevens with family and friends. Being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in his mid 40’s it never stopped him from doing what he loved.
Relatives and friends are invited to the Mark Jutzi Funeral Home, 291 Huron Street, New Hamburg, on Thursday from 2 – 4 & 6 – 8 p.m. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Roman Catholic Parish on Friday, August 30, 2023 at 11:00am.
